Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Virginia Praeger, an American heiress, bears a son and two daughters, none of whom are the offspring of her husband, the Earl of Caterham. But that’s a naughty little secret best kept buried. Then the children grow up, hear rumors, and begin investigating their true paternity, and their nosing around threatens to shatter two powerful families joined by marriage. Set in the glamorous worlds of an American banking dynasty and the British aristocracy, Vincenzi’s (More Than You Know, 2012) latest family saga is rife with backstabbing, greed, scandal, extramarital dalliances, and, yes, wicked pleasures. Over 600 pages long, the novel is a bit ponderous, with dialogue that seems trifling at times, but the mystery of the children’s parentage is intriguing. Bottom line: if blockbusters about the überrich harboring scandalous secrets and brought to the brink of ruin is your cup of tea, drink heartily. Vincenzi is queen of the genre, and this is Dynasty meets Downton Abbey. --Diane Holcomb

"Vincenzi (The Best of Times; Windfall) does it again with another captivating and entertaining family saga that combines power, riches, lies, and greed. As soon as Virginia, Countess of Caterham, confesses to her therapist that none of her children are aware they have different fathers, readers are hooked . . . the compelling main plot will keep readers glued to the pages of this lengthy novel. For fans of Barbara Taylor Bradford and Danielle Steel." — Library Journal

Like all of Penny Vincenzi's books this was another page turner and I love all the twists and turns she injects into her stories. I found this one was one of her best because of the changing storyline that had us following the American Side of the family in One Chapter and then over to the completly different way of life of the English wealthy family. I love the fact she writes nice long novels and this one didn't dissappoint and it was interesting to read about the English side of banking and then compare the American way. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes family sagas and a book with lots of twists and turns. I am looking forward to reading more of Penny!

This book follows one family and their unique twists of fate. A woman who has three children by different man, but in love with her husband, a man so obsessed with his title and home, that he will do anything to protect it..... Rich and privileged, but all haunted by some unhappiness. A really good, if not long, book. I really enjoyed "Wicked Pleasures" and I'll be back for more Penny Vincenzi books.

The book is wonderful. I couldn't put it down. The plot keeps you turning pages for hours. I highly recommend it. I've read many of her books, and while some are better than others, this one is among the great ones she's written.

In an author's note at the beginning of WICKED PLEASURES (which was originally published in the United Kingdom in 1992), Penny Vincenzi addresses readers who have written to her about her beloved Spoils of Time trilogy, how much they enjoyed reading it and how much they regretted its coming to an end. Although certainly not as all-encompassing as The Spoils of Time, WICKED PLEASURES seems in many ways to be an answer to these readers. With its expansive cast of characters united by family ties and business aspirations, with its time span that stretches from 1956 all the way to 1980, the book will certainly satisfy fans looking for a sensational, multi-generational saga.

At the center of the novel is Virginia Praeger, a Wellesley College student when the story opens. She is part of a noted American banking family, but although she is interested in the family business, her father has made it abundantly clear that she will not play any sort of leadership role in the bank when (or if) he retires. Instead, management of the bank will be passed to Virginia's brother Fred, known to all as Baby. So what's an intelligent, ambitious young woman to do? Virginia decides to blaze her own trail, to try her hand at the relatively new (and slightly scandalous) business of interior design. She's good at it, it turns out --- and the business not only introduces her to career success but also to the man who will become her husband, Alexander, the British Earl of Caterham.

Alexander and Virginia appear to be the perfect match --- their courtship is classic and chaste, and Alexander seems eager to introduce Virginia to his country manor estate in England. Introducing Virginia to his reclusive mother, however, is more of a problem.

This book combines "edge-of-the-seat" thrilling plotlines (to keep you turning the pages) with brilliant observations on human nature and the worlds of american banking and english aristocratic society. However, it is the superbly shocking revellations suddenly materialising on the pages when you least expect them which prove Penny Vincenzi to be a powerful force in modern literature. I would recommend this book to anyone.

i loved penny vincenzi's lytton family trilogy. sheer abandon and other books so i was excited to read this family saga. sadly it appears that the author is trying to keep up with 50 shades of gray. this book has none of the charm of her other novels. just shallow and borderline trashy. characters are underdeveloped. story lines are left incomplete. the last 20% of the book seems like a half hearted attempt to just wrap things up. totally disappointng. i expect better quality from this author. would never recommend this book to friends.

I found this book right up there with all of her others. Only complaint that I have is that she wrote a similar novel a few years ago but since I didn't recognize all of the characters right away and certainly didn't remember the ending, I couldn't put it down at all until the end. Waiting for another one coming hopefully in 2013!
