Product Description

LORD WHITTINGTON CAUSED HER TO HAVE THOUGHTS NO DECENT WOMAN SHOULD HAVE... Priscilla Phipps will not be deterred from her goal, even if it means facing up to the powerful Wyoming Stock Grower's Association and cattle barons like Adam Whittington, who want the homesteaders--the very people who are supporting the newspaper Priscilla is trying to establish--driven out of Wyoming. But Adam has his own means of handling the troublesome spinster who's alienating every cattleman in the area, raising havoc with his libido, and putting a damper on his run for mayor of Cheyenne. And Priscilla, a maiden lady who's never been touched by a man, suddenly finds herself lusting after forbidden desires. 74,320 words

The Wyoming Controversy Rages on. Not only was the story captivating, but the research was right on. I happen to be familiar with the Wyoming controversy surrounding the Watson woman and the man with the neighboring claim, and which becomes a major pivotal point in the story, and like many in the area, I happen to take the side that Ms. Watters presented in "Wicked Temptations," believing that six men, some portrayed as actual characters in the book, got away with murder. An author's note at the end explains the outcome of the incident, which is also historically accurate. The problems between the homesteaders and the cattle barons at the time that the story takes place is also historically accurate, and I loved how Ms. Watters positioned her hero and heroine, Priscilla Phipps and Lord Adam Whittington, on opposite sides of the very heated issue. I had no idea how this would be resolved in the story, and it kept me going right up to a very satisfying ending.

The movie, "The Invasion of Johnson County," depicted the cattle barons' attempts to drive out a group of small ranchers and take over their properties and the ultimate battle between the two factions at this time, and "Wicked Temptations" is set shortly before then, with the incident in the story with the Watson woman actually being the beginning of the end of the rule of the cattle barons in Wyoming. I highly recommend this book for both reading enjoyment and a glimpse into Cheyenne, Wyoming in the late 1800s, during the reign of the cattle barons.

Wicked Temptations was an exciting blend of fascinating history and very hot romance. Priscilla Priss, the heroine, was an independent, brave and somewhat reckless spinster who goes to Cheyenne, Wyoming with plans to start a women's newspaper. Originally, she has no intention of getting involved in the growing conflict between the rich cattlemen and the poor homesteaders. Lord Adam Whittington, the hero, was a rich, powerful, cattle baron who made a fortune selling beef to the English market and he is expecting a mail-order bride (who came west under Priscilla's chaperonage) to be a mother to his children. None of the four brides wants to get married after they actually see the prospective grooms, so Priscilla buys out their contracts and expects the girls to work for her. Although Adam and Priscilla can't seem to agree on anything, neither of them can fight the extremely strong physical attraction they share. The growing tensions between the cattlemen and homesteaders mirrors the problems between Adam and Priscilla until everything culminates in a lynching. I don't want to spoil the story, so I'll stop here.

The trouble between the cattle barons and the homesteaders over the rights to government land along with issues like women's suffrage, is historically accurate and is written about very well. The dialogue is authentic and fun to read and the imagery is vivid and believable. There are some editing mistakes but they are not bad enough to interfere with the flow of the story. I enjoyed reading Wicked Temptations and I recommend that anyone who likes a good western historical romance should try this one.

I'm about 80% of the way through, and I just want this whole town to be swallowed by some freak flood or something. The heroine is supposed be independent and intelligent, but really just comes off as obnoxious and condescending. She also says "I don't know what to think" about a thousand times. Sometimes multiple times per page. I'll finish it, and I'll probably be happy with the result, but I just feel that I've been reading for a while now and nobody is actually making any progress towards anything other than their "unnatural attraction" for each other, which is frustrating.
