K-Gr. 2. Each of these slim books features three folktales retold with flair, printed in fairly large type, and illustrated by charming paintings. Cunning Cat includes "Puss in Boots," "The White Cat," and "Sir Pussycat," while Wicked Wolf offers "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Wicked Wolf and the Seven Little Kids," and "Mr. W. Wolf." Though Cecil embellishes the tales a little with phrases such as, "'Mama treats me like a baby,' thought Little Red Riding Hood," the stories are well chosen and very accessible. The layout makes good use of white space. Sometimes several illustrations appear on the same double-page spread. Glowing with jewel-bright colors, the artwork provides innocent, child-friendly interpretations of the stories that might be scary for very young children. Available in both jacketed hardcover and sturdy paperback editions, these fully illustrated collections are well suited for reading aloud. Carolyn Phelan
