Book Description

Known as the wicked witch of Russian fairy tales, Baba Yaga is not one woman, but rather a title carried by a chosen few. They keep the balance of nature and guard the borders of our world, but don’t make the mistake of crossing one of them…

Older than she looks and powerful beyond measure, Barbara Yager no longer has much in common with the mortal life she left behind long ago. Posing as an herbalist and researcher, she travels the country with her faithful (mostly) dragon-turned-dog in an enchanted Airstream, fulfilling her duties as a Baba Yaga and avoiding any possibility of human attachment.

But when she is summoned to find a missing child, Barbara suddenly finds herself caught up in a web of deceit and an unexpected attraction to the charming but frustrating Sheriff Liam McClellan.

Now, as Barbara fights both human enemies and Otherworld creatures to save the lives of three innocent children, she discovers that her most difficult battle may be with her own heart…

Editorial Reviews

Praise for Wickedly Dangerous "This is paranormal romance at its best, with all the magic and mayhem tied together with very human emotions, even when the characters aren't quite human."–Alex Bledsoe, author of Wisp of a Thing   "In Wickedly Dangerous, Deborah Blake has updated Baba Yaga for the 21st century; witchy and wild, with a kick-ass woman, witty repartee, and roots to the past. This book has everything I’m looking for." –Tanya Huff, author of The Silvered   "An addicting plot combined with a unique adventure and an intelligent, pragmatic heroine kept me glued to the page. I never had so much fun losing sleep!"–Maria V. Snyder, New York Times bestselling author of the Healer series

4.0 out of 5 stars LITERAL ADDICTION's Review of Wickedly Dangerous September 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Our Review, by LITERAL ADDICTION's Vivacious Valkyrie - Marta:
*Copy gifted in exchange for an honest review

Now this is completely different and I'm so pleased that the old legend is given a new twist! For centuries the old Russian legend of Baba Yaga has both fascinated and terrified many but this new series brings a whole new spin on the idea of a woman connected by magic to the earth and woe betide any who cross her. Neither wholly good nor really wicked the Baba Yaga will often be sought by those needing help but making a bargain with her will often have consequences so beware!

Barbara Yeager is so much more than she seems to be. A woman traveling with her dog with a fascination for herbs and their uses but Barbara is also known as Baba Yaga! Oh shes not just the witch of eastern folklore but one of a handful who protect the boundaries between worlds and carry the title of Baba Yaga. Called to a small town by a sense of acute distress Barbara quickly finds out that children are going missing but she also attracts the attention of the local sheriff Liam and the law and Barbara's secrets are quite literally worlds apart! Something nasty is in the town and Liam clearly needs help as what's attacking the townsfolk is most definitely not from the mortal realm but how can Barbara save the missing children without giving her secret away?
This was an unexpected delight and I loved that the author took inspiration from old legends without rehashing them too much. The Baba Yaga is still portrayed as a woman who can be tricky when it comes to magic and her incredible home from the old stories comes bang up to date in this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Found A New Auto-Buy Author September 5, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Excellent entry into the UF/PNR genre. When I tell you that I laughed outloud, I mean that literally. I was so enamored with this book that I was tweeting quotes and Facebook hounding my friends to read it as well.

Barbara Yager is a Baba Yaga. Her cover is adjunct professor of botany. Her chicken-legged hut is a recalcitrant Airstream now with perks, or is that quirks, like a fridge that might or might not deliver what you asked for. Her primary sidekick is a large pitbull who is actually a small dragon.

Liam is the sheriff who has problems with missing children and a no-confidence vote pending from the local council who hired him. The last thing he needs is a stranger with a big dog.

Turns out he does need Baba even if he's not the one who called her. The antics include biker dragons, slightly psychotic Faery Queens, and mysterious women.

I won't go into a lot of plot fal-de-rol but this book is very true to the Baba Yaga mythology. I loved loved loved it. So much that I bought the prequel novella (3.5 stars) and preordered book 2.

If you like sassy heroines who don't know how to handle love and damaged heroes who hover between alpha and beta without being whiny or overbearing, go get this book. :D

5.0 out of 5 stars Great new series September 2, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wickedly Dangerous is the first novel in a series by Deborah Blake. I was fortunate enough to win a ARC, which this review is based on. Baba Yaga...aka Barbara Yager is an intriguing heroine. She is a (not quite) mild mannered, reserved botanist who just happens to be a Baba Yaga, the "wicked" witch of Russian fables. This Baba has a soft spot for protecting children, so when called upon to find children who are missing from a small town she is ready to use her magical resources, aided by the handsome local sheriff, to unravel the mystery.

I absolutely loved this book. The characters were compelling, the story was well paced and there were so many creative inventions to update and add modern twists to Baba's story. Her "hut" enchanted airstream trailer....her dragon, Chudo-Yudo, masquerades as a very large dog. The story is presented with humor, as in the banter between Baba and her dragon. The author shows keen insights into small town living, which can be challenging, especially to an outsider who is "different".

This is the first in a series of novels, and was preceded by a novella, Wickedly Magical, which was also excellent. I am looking forward to the next book, Wickedly Wonderful.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun and sexy paranormal story September 4, 2014
Format:Mass Market Paperback
When I read the blurb for WICKEDLY DANGEROUS, I knew right away that I'd have to read this one. I mean come on, a story about Baba Yaga? And she's not an old hag? How awesome is that?!? Of course this means I went into the book with very high expectations, but I'm happy to report that those expectations were warranted. It's such a fun, sassy, and sexy book. I really enjoyed the blending of the worlds between the human realm and Otherworld, with Baba straddling both of them. It definitely made things more than a little interesting.

Baba is such a fun character. She's definitely a fish out of water, and despite being pretty old (ages very slowly) she doesn't know anything about relationships or really how to deal with attraction and romance. So it was pretty amusing to see her stumbling all over herself for Liam, despite her hard act and exterior. It has that first love and new experiences feel to it, without seeming too young and naive. Liam is the perfect match for her as while he's a strong right side of the law kind of man, he has his priorities in order and didn't stubbornly hold onto the law. They are a bit of opposites so it was amusing at times to see them clash, but overall they really worked together for me. The romance in general left a smile on my face, and that's all I ask for.

I will say that after finishing this one and reading the blurb for the next one, I was a bit bummed to see that things wouldn't be continuing on with this Baba, but onto another one. I just felt like there could have been so much more added onto this story. But regardless, I'm still eagerly anticipating the next story if this one is any indication of how much I'll enjoy it. So if you are looking for a fun and sexy paranormal story that's a different change of pace, WICKEDLY DANGEROUS is worth a look. Or two.
