Product Description

Product Description

GENUINE TURKEY FEATHERS, Widdy is one of several companies that manufacture darts for use on American dart boards. These darts are completely unlike those used in English board games. The darts are composed of several different elements. The most obvious trait is that the body is a single piece of wood. The darts come it at roughly 5 3/4" in total length. The barrel of a Widdy dart is thick, roughly 1 5/8" around at its largest point. The barrel is tapered though, so it's wider towards the front of the dart and much slimmer in the rear where the flights are attached. The weight of the an American dart lies in its nose. That's where the steel tip is inserted into the body of the dart. The point extends 1 1/4" out of a metal base that is attached to the barrel. To provide some sense of balance, there is a section of lead that is inserted into the barrel, so the dart is not so front heavy that it couldn't fly properly. Widdys have three flights attached to them in a triangle pattern. They are also hot stamped with the words "Official Tournament" and "Widdy Dart Mfg. Philadelphia PA No. 1" on them. They also have an identifying blue band around them.

From the Manufacturer

Widdy darts are the original handcrafted wood darts complete with genuine turkey feather flights.

Over 40 yrs. ago when I was twenty, I first purchased the Widdy Dart Board that came with these exact same Widdy wood barrel darts. I recently handed down to my son this original dart board with the same 40 yr. old darts that once were at the center of many, many fantastic good times. The darts had seen a lot of intense action over the years and showed a rich character from use. Some rare times, a following shooter would incredibly land their dart right into the barrel of a preceding dart that was in the board. The darts are durable, balanced, and smooth in action. When I took the Widdy board off the wall these many years later, the face side showed minimal wear considering the hundreds of games played into the nite drinking beers. When I flipped the board over, the other side had the look of a brand new board. Great white background, classic lettering.... I was so glad to have found the exact same darts that came with the board. When first seeing the new darts, I couldn't believe that nothing had changed from the originals. My son knows modern darts but had no idea of the character, feel, and unique looks of playing with these one-of-a kind vintage style darts. Now that he's tried the Widdy wooden barrel dart, he won't go back to the cold, mechanical, look and feel of metal darts.

I have heard nothing but great things about Widdy darts, hence the purchase. Not sure if it was a fluke box or if the entire brand has taken a turn for the worst, but the darts I got were of VERY poor quality at the feathered ends. If I had not waited so long prior to opening the box, I would have emailed amazon to get a replacement product. Almost every single feather was crushed/misaligned, which I could not figure out if it was due to packaging or just craftsmanship. There was so much excess glue on the ends adjacent to the feathers, that it is visibly bubbled out when dry. Also, not only were the feathers and glue not done to Widdy standards, but the blue paint just below the feathers was very poorly applied and not even. I use this paint to sight the dart on the board and it can be difficult if the line is not consistent around the dart and is failing/chipped off upon arrival.

I have no complaints with the lead tips or the wooden shaft.

Long story short, I know plenty of people who have gotten great quality darts by Widdy, so OPEN THE PACKAGE once it arrives to ensure the quality is up to brand/your standards. I was very dissapointed with this purchase, but felt it inappropriate to return after several weeks (as I had not opened the box to verify the quality of my purchase upon its arrival). Lesson learned for all future purchases - open the package the day you get it to verify everything is how you expect it to be!

these darts are super cool i feel like they are better quality than normal darts because there are feathers for the flights and they feel slightly vintage which i like.

The traditional steel tip wooden darts are just what he wanted! They float well consistently and are a good value.

I got these Widdy Classic American Darts to use for having a catch with my grandson and we didn't make it five minutes before we were both bloodied and sore. Potential Byers should be prewarned that these darts are not suitable alternatives to wiffle balls despite "wiffle" and "widdy" looking so similar. What me and my grandson did was wash out our puncture wounds with hydrogen peroxide and covered them with bandages before eating the sandwiches and chips my wife made for our lunch. My wife, who is a retired school teacher of 33 years, suggested that instead of throwing these darts for the other one to catch, we could fill up water balloons with water from the spigot that is on the side of my house, next to the central air conditioning unit that we just had serviced. We take these "water balloons" and lay them out in the yard on either side of my wife's clothes line and we throw a blanket (you could also use a tarp) over the line and we play a game where we lob the darts from our respective sides of the blanket and we play a fun version of battleship. We still have had some issues of getting hit from a stray dart, but not nearly as much now. I am sure you can make up a lot of other fun games with these and would love to hear more

As other reviewers mentioned, I too opened up my box of darts to find a few damaged fletchings: bent, off-set a bit, gaps. As others mention, as well, the glue was very sloppy and on some it ran well down the dart shaft and some had globs where the fletching mates with the dart shaft. The blue paint is horribly applied, very runny and smeared and unsightly.

It did arrive well packaged, which got this product one star. The other star is for the relatively low price, considering it's not a typical plastic dart.

Personally, I think you should only order this if you'd need this for a prop or for wanting to play a game of darts with a "retro" era feel to it. If you expect high quality from one end to the other, you'll be giving it a star or two like I did. I don't know if these are inexpensive because they're culled out and considered to be junkers anyway, but regardless the quality (except for the dart point and shaft) is very poor.
