FRESH TEXAS TALENT,
By BOMAYFIELD (DALLAS) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wide Afternoon (Audio CD)
I have only recently come to appreciate country music and I can say that Max Stalling is one of the most creative artists I have ever heard, regardless of the type of music. He blends great lyrics and spectacular music to achieve a sort of cross between George Strait and Robert Earl Keene, although his voice is much more on par with Strait (no offense Bob). On songs like "Runnin' Buddy" and "Travelin' Lite" you cannot help but tap your feet as Max and his band deliver two of the greatest country songs ever written. On "Bass Run" he adds a Mexican flare with the his lead guitarist (an extremely talented musician in his own right) delivering the south of the border sound. I could go on and on about every song on this album because there truly is not a bad one. This album is better than his first and he is showing that he has a lyrical and musical repertoire that is full of new and creative ideas. There really are no slow country ballads on this album, which to me is the typical sign that a country singer has run out of ideas. This album is upbeat and just all around a good listen for anytime. Songs like "Dimebox,TX" and "These Reminders" are his own transformation of the stereo-typical ballads, yet Max does them in a way that is anything but typical. Being from Texas and knowing all of his allusions just makes it that much better. If you are at all interested in good music you really should buy this album, no matter where you live. I guarantee that you will be a big fan.

This is REAL Country,

Tired of Shania, Faith, and the other Pop Country? Try a real test of where country should have evolved. Stallings represents the best of the new country singers/songwriters. This genre, rooted in the realities of what country life is all about, might be labeled as "Texas" country. In fact it touches the soul of real country.Try it. You'll like it.

"Comfort In The Curves" has my favorite Stalling song on it but this cd is great music from Green Lights to Wide Afternoon. Anyone who appreciates good songwriting and great singing will enjoy Wide Afternoon.

Great Texas Road Trip album,

There is not a bad song on this album. It's a lot of fun. Well written, meaningful tunes that are just perfect for driving and listening to. If you like local grown, Texas talent, this is a fresh, likeable effort. You won't regret downloading this one. IF you just want to try a couple, I'd recommend "running buddy" and "bass run". But go ahead and get the whole thing.

This is a good CD to purchase. Many good songs on this cut and being that it's not live, the finer points of the various instruments are recongnizable. I would recommend to purchase this CD.

Great Sophomore Effort from a Talented Songwriter,

Wide Afternoon is a great CD. Unlike so many CD's which only feature one or two good songs buried in a sea of goo, this CD is start-to-finish, high-quality Texas singing and songwriting. Max is so unassuming and so sincere in his storytelling that it's all but impossible to be taken in by his songs.I've been fortunate enough to see Max live a few times too, and he's just as unpretentious and authentic in person as he is on this CD. So if you can't get out to see Max perform live here in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex, at least buy his CD and do your soul a little bit of good by listening to it in your car. It might even be a good cure for road rage.

Reaching Beyond the Lone Star State,

Start with the intelligent lyrical sensibilities of James McMurtry, (the Lone Star conponent) add some cheerful good humor ala Jimmy Buffet, and set it to a melodic gallop that would do the early Jawhawks proud.

Fresh and new, this is what country music is when it is written and performed from the heart not for the pocketbook! This boy has the cleanest, clearest voice I've heard in a long time. Buy it and enjoy it.
