Editorial Reviews

This is the 3rd release from this hard working bluegrass/newgrass band featuring all original material plus a great cover of The Postal Service hit Such Great Heights . Joy Kills Sorrow s sound is born from the best of two worlds. They start with a base of time honored timbres and techniques, yet fashion original songs and arrangements that reflect a love of indie rock and new folk.

I've followed acoustic music for fifty years. Now and again you hear something truly new, a brand new direction. Bill Monroe did that when he changed stringband music to bluegrass 60+ years ago. David Grisman's "Dawg" style music made this move, and in a way so did the Nickel Creek opus. I would put Joy Kills Sorrow's "Wide Awake" in the same high category. It's a change that's the clear inheritor of a musical tradition and simultaneously brilliant in ways that are utterly innovative. Listen quiet or listen loud, the sound is strangely perfect. And I agree with the other reviewer in wishing it would've had a few more songs. Maybe Amazon will knock a buck or two off if we ask sweetly. Or maybe not.

I have listened to Joy Kills Sorrow for some time. The last two records, with the current band line up, have been very good with some great songs and some that were "not so great" . This record is a real leap forward that, in my opinion, puts this band into a new place. Every tune is a gem. The songwriting is very impressive. Every members of this band is a great musician that has managed to craft their individual part so that they all fit together perfectly. It almost seems unfair to single out any one player but .... Jacob Jolliff is one of the most innovative mandolin players that I have ever heard. I would put him in the same sentence with Chris Thile, Jesse McReynolds, Ricky Skaggs and Kym Warner, yeah, he's that good. Emma Beaton's singing is really special, very unique, it kinda flows over you like a warm velvet shower (yeah, I said it). Like others I do wish that the record was longer but that does not take away from what this band has accomplished here. So, I have rated it a 5 star EP. Deservedly so.

Thank you, Kate S., for playing this marvelous CD for me! Now I love it as much as you do. The lead singer is sensational, never sacrificing the essence of the song to her ego. The band is so tight. The mandolinist exceptional.
