5.0 out of 5 stars Love this bottle!
Due to concerns about plastic, my family went with this glass bottle. We tried 2 to begin with, and loved it so much we bought 8 more! The bottles are very durable and made of very thick glass. They can be sterilized in the dishwasher without worries about degrading plastic. We've been using these for over 6 months now with no problem of the markings coming off. Love...

2.0 out of 5 stars BUYER BEWARE for Born Free Glass Bottles, December 19, 2007
The measurement markings on the bottles will come off, the company is aware of this issue, and is not willing to do anything about it!

The box that the glass bottle comes in says "Dishwasher safe". I have had the bottles for 3 weeks, washed them on the top rack of the dishwasher once a day, and the markings have started fading, on some bottles almost completely, making it difficult to measure water for formula accurately, and adding an extra step in with having to sterilize something else to use to measure the water before putting it in the bottle.

When I called the company to try to resolve the issue, I spoke to someone who identified herself as a customer service manager. When I told her that the markings had faded she acknowledged that that happens when they are washed in the dishwasher but not if they are boiled. She said this is because they don't use any harsh chemicals and use food grade dye for safety. When I told her that the bottles are only 3 weeks old she said it doesn't always happen that quickly.

That's all very well, but what about the integrity of the product, and the statement on the box and on the website that they are dishwasher safe if they clearly aren't? What about informing the consumer who purchases the product about the possibility of the markings disappearing IF a dishwasher is used?

When I asked her how she could resolve my problem, she said "Unfortunately there is nothing I can do."

For an emerging company in a market that is going to be fiercely competitive, I believe that this is a substandard product, and the company has substandard customer service. I deeply regret spending $100 on 10 bottles from this company.

****UPDATE 01/22/08**** I purchased some glass paints (marker style) from a craft store, and painted on the markings before they disappeared completely on some. Other's I had to try to transfer from other bottles. It has to dry for 24 hrs and then go in the oven at 300 deg for 30 mins, but it has worked like a charm. The markings have stayed put and I have no trouble measuring out the correct amount of water now.

1.0 out of 5 stars not a good choice if you're trying to avoid plastics, August 14, 2010

These glass bottles contain a plastic internal valve that the milk has to pass through before your baby drinks it. What's the point of a glass bottle if it's full of plastic components? (According to the packaging, the bottle cannot be used without the valve, so taking it out isn't an option.)

Evenflo glass bottles don't have internal plastic (and are 1/5 the price of these); I just wish they came in wide mouth.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but I found a better solution!, October 22, 2008
I bought this bottle for my occasional use of bottles with pumped breastmilk, but careful as I tried to be, getting my large infant son out of his non-carrier carseat, hefting him on one hip and wrestling to get the bottle in the diaper bag, I dropped it and it smashed all over the asphalt. That was when I found a better bisphenol-A free solution. The Kleen Kanteen leach-free stainless-steel sippy cup comes with the Avent sippy spout, and is therefore interchangeable with Avent nipples, and coincidentally, the nipple from this bottle as well. So I kept the nipple from the smashed bottle, and popped it into the ring that came with the Kleen Kanteen sippy, and voila, a stainless steel baby bottle with the nice nipple that keeps proper sucking posture at the breast. Best of all worlds. And unlike Sigg stainless, the Kleen Kanteen is not coated with epoxy on the inside. For my money, why drink out of epoxy if getting away from chemicals in water is the whole point?
I don't work for Kleen Kanteen (but I should, huh?) but the switching of the nipple for the sippy spout gave me an indestructable leach-free baby bottle that can also be the baby's sippy cup, and later, child's sport bottle, just by changing the spout. Talk about a lasting value! However I will warn that this solution did NOT come with the built-in valve to equalize pressure, so using the stainless steel sippy as a bottle meant that vacuum did build up and my baby had to stop sucking periodically to allow the nipple to draw air so it wouldn't collapse. For an older baby it's no big deal, but I can see why for a younger baby, that self-equalizing valve is important.

As for this bottle, it was great for its purpose, easier to clean than narrow glass bottles, and I would never use plastic again. Nothing wrong with a glass bottle if you never fumble it getting out of the car like I did, and until I discovered the stainless steel option, this was the best choice for me. Oh, the stainless also protects the valuable nutrients in breastmilk from being compromised by exposure to light, but I think you can buy neoprene sleeves for the glass bottles that block light, protect the bottle better from breakage, and insulate.
The nipple that came with the Born Free is the best, because it had the shape of the Avent that prevents bad sucking habits at the breast, but is softer and more comfortable in the baby's mouth than the Avent. So top ratings to this Born Free nipple!

5.0 out of 5 stars More like the real thing & less gas!, September 7, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
My son is primarily breastfed, but as I have to work half time this year, I needed a bottle he would accept easily. He took to this one right away. With the others we tried he seemed to get a lot of gas bubbles, but with this bottle, he does just fine and is more comfortable throughout his day. The nipple is wider, and more like the real thing. Plus the bottle itself is glass, with no danger of BPA! A real winner. Bought 2, one for at home (for his daddy to use) and one for the diaperbag for his sitter.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ink came off only half of my bottles, July 15, 2008

I love these glass bottles. They clean up great and don't leak. I do have the problem with the ink wearing off on 2 of the 4 glass bottles I bought. There is obviously some difference in the ink and all 4 of my bottles are washed exactly the same. Now if only I could locate more bottles without the disappearing ink!! Just an FYI, if you can learn ml measurements that dark blue ink does not come off.

5.0 out of 5 stars I love Born Free bottles, May 12, 2011
I switched over to Born Free when bubs was 4.5 months because I started to become really concerned about other chemicals leaking into the milk due to BPA free plastic baby bottles. Researched for quite a while and glass bottles are quite expensive. I switched from the Avent system and was quite concerned that baby wouldn't like them. It took him a few days to adjust to the speed of the new nipples but he is fine now (stage 2, he is almost five months). I was also concerned about the venting system working like Avent so that he wouldn't get gas in his stomach. Let me assure you that the system is different but also limits the gas, you can see the bubbles rising to the surface just like Avent. When I got the bottles I was pleasantly surprised that they placed a cap like insert with the bottle so that you can close up the bottle without the nipple. With Avent you must buy these separately. Also, these bottles really are leak free as long as you screw them tight enough. No more annoying milk leaks after shaking up the bottle. The mouth is also very wide so easy to make formula in. The bottles that I got were not from Amazon (found cheaper. $7.50 for a 9oz) but another provider so the ml markings were engraved in the bottle. This is nice because they will never rub off, but also a bit hard to see in the dark. The bottle has five parts all together which is a bit annoying to clean and put together but because I wanted a good quality glass bottle that is what you have to live with. As other reviewers have mentioned you can tell this is good quality glass, very thick. It is not Pyrex though so be careful heating or going from extreme temperatures. I hope to save these bottles if I have another baby. Also, a good tip for parents-to-be. It is not necessary to get the smaller size 4 or 5oz bottles just because your baby is a newborn. Just buy the 9oz bottles and don't fill it up as much. When your baby hits about 3-4 months they will eat a lot more and it is not worth filling up two small bottles when all you need is one big bottle. I have six size 9oz bottles and that gets me through one day and a night. I look forward to using the sippy spouts and transforming the bottles to good chemical free sippys. I am a bit disappointed in Avent for not making glass bottles. I chose the system because I needed to pump milk so bought into the whole bottle system because of that. You can tell which companies are actually concerned about the quality of their products and the well being of their consumers by giving choices. I don't see how it would be difficult for Avent to offer glass bottles. I think the issue is profits, plastic bottles are more cheaper to make than glass.

Also, plastic BPA free bottles become scratched up and it is hard to make sure the the inside is clean because of the plastic. With the glass, you can feel that squeaky clean feeling and can see that the bottle is clean. One other point, you can pour very hot water in these and let them cool to put formula in later, without worrying about chemicals leaching into the water. Only con: the bottle is heavier but not an issue for me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pricey, but great bottles, June 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Our son is exclusively breastfed, and we worried about introducing a bottle due to the dreaded "nipple confusion." After researching and speaking with other moms, Born Free bottles were consistently praised, and we were able to introduce a bottle at 4 weeks with no problem whatsoever. The bottles don't leak at all, no problems with nipple collapse, and my son hasn't had any problems with gas or spit up. Plus, the glass is sturdy and looks like new each time they are washed and sterilized (unlike my medela plastic bottles, which get cloudy). They also fit perfectly in my Avent steam sterilizer. They're expensive, but absolutely worth it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Better than Dr Brown's, February 11, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
Purchased the 9 oz glass bottle as Dr Brown only makes glass bottles up to 7oz and my baby was already taking in 6oz at 4 months. By far the Born Free bottle is easier to use and MUCH easier to clean than Dr Brown's. My baby took to it immediately. No nipple confusion, nor nipple collapse. I highly recommend this product.

4.0 out of 5 stars great glass bottle, October 15, 2008
These bottles are awesome!! I have dropped them on the floor a couple of times full of breastmilk and they never broke. THANK GOD! I would hate to see the breastmilk wasted. The ink marks for the measures do wear off after a while washing them in the dishwasher, but it seems mostly the ml marks not the ounce marks. And the vents do the trick. I forgot to put the vent once on the bottle and the nipple kept collapsing. And when the baby drinks milk, you can see air bubbles coming out from the vent indicating the air flow.

UPDATE: I have been using them for 16 months now. I should say that the inner nipple (ventilation part) does get worn out and the little line on it that would allow air in and keep the liquid out expands after use. But they sell separate ventilation system so you could replace them.
