Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Widespread Panic is so much more than just a jam-happy rock band. From the time Michael Houser and John Bell (JB) began playing duets around Athens, Georgia, in the early 80 s, their repertoire ranged from early covers of the Grateful Dead and Bob Marley to a host of original songs (including Space Wrangler, included here) that demonstrate, as The Village Voice wrote, a willingness to dip their collective toe into just about any genre. This is classic Widespread Panic, including David Schools on bass, John Hermann on keys, Todd Nance on drums and Domingo Ortiz on percussion.

With the exception of climb to safety (which i personally cant stand), this is an amazing DVD. Great video and sound quality throughout. The band is really on their game and Mikey brings the house down during Space Wrangler. Driving>Surprise Valley>Driving is another gem. Panic will never be the same as it was with Houser but they are sounding pretty good now that Jimmy has settled in. The boys get 5+ stars for this one. Thank you Austin City Limits and Brown Cat for releasing this. Go see this band!

WSP played at the Austin City Limits TV show and it was a grat Jam. Not all of their songs but the variety shows how versatile this semi-Dead, Semi-Phish band really is!

Widespread Panic - Live From Austin, Texas movie. The band is legendary for never playing the same show twice, or the same song the same way twice. This night was special in many ways being the bands 25th anniversary tour.

This concert was also more of a celebration of founding band member Michael Houser(guitar, vocals) who died within two years later of pancreatic cancer. Anybody who knows anything about Widespread Panic knows that they are more than a feel good, jam band. This is another marathon show with nobody really knowing what to expect until the band takes center stage.

The band also includes frontman John Bell, guitarist Jimmy Herring, Dave Schools on bass, keyboardist John "JoJo" Hermann, Todd Nance playing kit drums and Domingo "Sunny" Ortiz on percussion.

"Opening with "All Time Low," followed by "North," Widespread Panic settled into a groove, cranking out tasty beats and long jam sessions. They followed with "Give" and "Dirty Business," with the latter the highlight of the first set, full of bluesy, folksy rock, each member playing off the other, ebbing and flowing for minutes on end." The second set was just as excellent as the first with the crowd trying to outdo the band.

They rocked longer and louder than usual to the delight of all in attendance. 3 hours of pure sizzzling southern rock. A night to remember, a disc to definitely add to the library.
