Everybody loves surprises, that feeling of not knowing what might be around the next corner -- and that’s exactly the vibe that Widespread Panic gives off every time they unleash a new album. Sometimes that means taking listeners on a nice, smooth ride, and sometimes it means making ‘em hold on tight, but either way, it means the trip is gonna be worth it.

Editorial Reviews

Widespread Panic is one of the most prominent bands of the ever-growing pool of young southerners whose sound recalls the Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker bands. With its six-minute songs, Widespread Panic are in no hurry to get their point across. This sophomore release focuses more on interplay between the players and less on traditional song structure than its predecessor, Space Wrangler. Their sound takes on a deeper percussive groove with the addition of Domingo S. Ortiz, who shapes the songs with cowbell and conga flourishes. This title will serve as a rewarding introduction to the band and a new breed of players. --Richard Gowen

5.0 out of 5 stars A staggering album!! December 12, 2000
Format:Audio CD
One of my top 10 all time. Released in 1991, their second studio recording, this music really holds up. When any of my friends want to hear one CD of the band I'm so crazy about, I give them this album. Better sound than Space Wrangler, more range than Everyday. "Barstools & Dreamers" and "Rock" are what WSP is all about: Tight playing, sweet jams, thoughtful lyrics, JB's howling vocals, Dave's pounding bass, and Mikey's patented guitar sound (long live the Telecaster!). Just amazing. Too many hi-lights to name, but be sure to check out the cover of Van Morrison's "Send Your Mind" and the epic ballad "Mercy".
Note:Predates the addition of JoJo on keys, and the more dominant New Orleans/funk sound, so if that's what you're looking for in a studio album, check out Til the Medicine Takes or Ain't Life Grand (in that order).

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic second album November 3, 2006
Format:Audio CD
This CD was released in 1991. It was Widespread Panic's first official release, but it is actually their second album. It is 72 minutes long and the sound quality is very good.

This an album of fantastic, hard driving, Southern rock songs. It is not like any other band and it is hard to describe. But, every song is great and every song is very distinctive.

At this time, the band was still a quartet. They had guest appearances by Domingo Ortiz on percussion and T. Lavitz (Dixie Dregs)on keyboards. But, the band had a cleaner, more stripped down sound.

After this album, Ortiz would join the band permanently and they would add hack keyboardist John Herrman. The bands sound would get muddled and they would lose their direction to some extent. Most of their later studio albums were not that good. But they always put on a good live show.

The first Widespread Panic album is Space Wrangler. It was originally sold as a cassette tape at concerts. A couple of tracks were added, and it was released as a CD. It is also fantastic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bring It On Home October 22, 2002
Format:Audio CD
...LOVE this album. This is one of those in your collection you just keep coming back to over - and over - and over. Eight years after first listening to this it still reeks of Athens, GA sentimentality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Makes Sense To Me November 3, 1998
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This 1st Panic studio record contains some of Widespread Panic's most important music. Songs like "Pigeons," "C.Brown," and "Send Your Mind" are some of the best Panic songs to hear at their live shows. Panic's southern-fried blues and hard rock attracts a diverse fan base, which includes everyone--from the grungiest of Jerry lovin' hippies to the slickest of hip-hop bohemians. "Widespread Panic" is like a contemporary fusion of Allman Brothers' "Eat a Peach" and Grateful Dead's "Europe '72," and with over 1000 live shows under their belts you know this band will always leave you smilin'. 5.0 out of 5 stars Bring it on Home May 18, 2000
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
This is a must buy for those who own a couple of albums and are ready for another Panic purchase. So much of this album is still featured on every tour, including Spring 2000. This is roots panic, this is what you need to get "it."
