This review is from: Widow (Audio CD)
In the days following 9/11, I heard the following commentary on NPR. A little girl was watchin the horrific images of the planes flying into the World Trade Center - as we all were - when her mother abruptly turned off the TV. The little girl began to cry. She wanted to continue watching. When questioned by her mom as to why, the girl replied, "Because the pictures are so beautiful."
The same could be said about Stephanie Simon's "Widow." The story behind the album is anyone's nightmare: Her spouse died quite suddenly, and quite young, of a heart attack. It's a story no one likes to hear about. But Ms. Simon somehow found the strength to write her story down in song. And my God, are these songs gorgeous. I've found myself listening to this CD over and over. Is it because I'm a masochist? I don' think so. I'll tell you why: Because the songs are so beautiful.
I don't think I've heard anything as hauntingly beautiful as "Abyss." "Light" is about as uplifting as a song can get. And I can't seem to get "Wartime" out of my head. It's that catchy.
There's certainly an odd beauty to "Widow." One which any music fan should experience.
