Book Description

Who killed Alfred de Maine, Lord Farnton? Highwaymen on the backroads of Ireland, as his pretty widow Eleanor claims? One of the traveling folk camped near the tiny village of Glenscar, where Eleanor fled in fear that day? A resident of Glenscar itself, trying to protect the village’s hidden power? Or did John Marlowe, the horse-breeder son of Glenscar’s squire, kill the lord to win the lady?

Eleanor knows the truth, but she also knows the value of a secret. Her own greatest desire, to marry John as soon as her six months of mourning are over, will be obtainable only so long as it remains unknown. Along the way, she must master her magic of moving, untangle her new friends’ romantic complications, and use heart and head in tandem to decide which stories to believe.

Will love and patience win the day, and Eleanor join hands with John at last? Or will she remain, forever, a Widow in Waiting?

Welcome to a world where magic lives in the quiet moments of the everyday, and where rich and poor, settled and wanderers, might have more in common than they dream. Welcome to the Chronicles of Glenscar.

About the Author

Anne B. Walsh has been telling stories from the time she could talk, but it took her twenty years to realize she could make a living at it. She left her office job on a leap of faith two months before seeing a PBS special which changed her life. The resulting four-book series of historical fantasy romances is known collectively as the Chronicles of Glenscar (or will be, when it involves more than one book!). Anne lives east of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with her roommate Krystal. They are owned by a pair of needy, and kneady, cats named Poppy and Sesame. Her parents and siblings live two hours north, otherwise known as just far enough away. She has been writing Harry Potter fan fiction for almost eight years and is known best in that genre as the creator of the "Dangerverse" alternate universe. Beyond writing fiction, Anne's preoccupations include reading fiction; singing anywhere that will have her, including her church and local galas; theatre, especially musicals; all forms of cooking; and her family and friends. Within writing fiction, her preoccupations are much the same, meaning most of her stories involve loving families, delicious food, and good music. Consider yourself warned. A number of projects are awaiting Anne's attention now that she has completed her first original novel. Among these are the final novel-length work in the Dangerverse, "Surpassing Danger", and her first personal anthology, "Cat Tales", a collection of short fiction featuring cats and cat-like beings, including a short prequel to "A Widow in Waiting" and a story from her original Trycanta universe. This was a fun story! The characters were delightful, the writing is easy to read and charming, with lots of humor. The good guys win, the bad guys lose, the perfect beach read! Can't wait to hear more from this author.

4.0 out of 5 stars Magic, gypsies and much more! July 17, 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
I received this book as part of a LibraryThing Member Giveaway. I really enjoyed the setting, the time period seemed very well-researched. The world that the author creates within that time period is fascinating and very well described. It is very easy to picture the towns and households of this novel. The characters are very well-written. They are well-developed and described with both their physical attributes and their personalities. There are a lot of characters in the book, and it can be somewhat confusing to keep them straight, however, the author as provided information about the families at the end of the book to help keep them organized. I thought all of the characters were very well done. The only problem I really had was the plot somewhat. Although I did enjoy the story very much, the plot was very confusing. The book is a 400 page book, the first 200 pages of the book mostly talks about events that happened previous to the present time in the book, I thought at first that this book must be a sequel and I had missed the first book in the series, and not much else happened for the characters in their present time except constant references to the previous events. i almost gave up on the book, thinking that I would have to find the previous book and read it first so I would know what was happening in this book. This flashback style continued throughout the book, enough so that most of the previous events were understood and explained, however the plot for the characters in their present time didn't really pick up until halfway through the book. I would just suggest that maybe for the first half of the book that there might be a little less flashbacks and a little more storyline for the characters in present day. Read more ›

I started reading Anne's stories when she was just writing fanfic online... She has completely blown me away with this book... I knew she was good before, but I absolutely loved this book! She is a fantastic author, and I love how she has taken a common concept (magic) and made it her own! If you haven't read her book yet.. Buy it now and give it a read! :)

I would definitely recommend this book to all my friends - the story is excellent and the characters interesting and well developed. I was very happy when I learned that there would be more books following this one, though it can be read on it's own. I can't wait to see what the author has in store next!

Everything I look for in a book - a clever story, superb antagonists, mystery, familial love, true love, real characters, and that something extra which turns a good book into a great one. Something in it for everyone!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, entertaining read! February 1, 2013

I enjoyed this book a great deal. The characters are wonderfully real, with lives that start before the story and continue after-which occasionally makes things confusing. It feels like I'm reading about 6 months in real people's lives-people with more exciting lives than mine. Flashbacks and story telling help fill in everything that happened before the story starts.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes stories with engaging characters and happy endings. I can't wait to read the stories of others in Glenscar.
