Book Description

Historical May 1, 1998
`Nick Dusaq's painful past had kept him from getting close to people, until the day he signed on at the widow Terhune's Wyoming territory ranch. But Rachel Terhune was like no widow woman the Texas cowboy had encountered before.

Rachel Terhune every thought was devoted to her ranch and the people who worked it, until the day she saw Nick Dusaq rising naked from the creek. Now the passion that flamed between them threatened to destroy them both.

"A richly textured Western about a strong woman, a dark tormented man, and a love as fierce and irresistible as the Wyoming wind." Mary Jo Putney, New York Times bestselling author

More About the Author

My readers say my books are "warm and witty", "down to earth", "poignant", with characters who "live and breathe" and "hit the sweet spot" of "laughter and tears."

I hope you'll find all that in reading the e-books I'm now offering through Kindle and www.AWritersWork.com

As for me, I had a great Midwestern childhood, though I did run away from home once - heading for Hollywood. Alas, Dairy Queen came before the train station, seriously depleting capital. Otherwise I surely would have been the only Oscar-winning screenplay writer under ten.

Instead, I followed the normal education track: BA and MSJ from Northwestern. Not quite as normal (especially way back then), I became a sports writer. It's great training for writing - dialogue, character, motivation, conflict, goals. All that went into my Winter Olympic-set "gold-medal winner" THE GAMES (www.patriciamclinn.com/games2010): Medals can be won, careers can be made, hearts can be lost in the sixteen days of the Winter Olympics.

Plus, I didn't have to get up early.

After being a sports writer for the Rockford (Ill.) Register Star and assistant sports editor at the Charlotte (N.C.) Observer, I moved to the Washington Post. That's when I started writing novels -- it all has to do with dried wallpaper paste. (For the full story, see www.PatriciaMcLinn.com)

A couple decades there and 25 books published, and I headed back to the Midwest to write full-time and enjoy the unfolding twists and turns of my plotline.

5.0 out of 5 stars Powerful, moving, and evocative!, June 2, 1998

This review is from: Widow Woman (Historical) (Paperback)
Patricia McLinn tells a great story, and WIDOW WOMAN, set in the 1880s Wyoming Territory, is a prime example of her considerable talents. The passion between Rachel, the widow woman determined to save her ranch, and Nick, the loner cowhand with dreams of his own, is incredibly powerful. McLinn's mastery of the perfect phrase and her ability to evoke the senses and emotions brings the country and its people alive and makes the reader fall in love with them. A wonderful book and a DARN GOOD read.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Romance, November 5, 2010
This review is from: Widow Woman (Kindle Edition)
This is a wonderful story about two very different people who are drawn together: Nick, a tough Texas cowboy; and Rachel, who's is determined to to keep her ranch against all odds. Although there are good and logical reasons why Nick and Rachel should avoid each other, the chemistry between them is just too strong. Their relationship, along with a tender secondary romance and the harsh beauty of the land surrounding them, make this an unforgetable read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two Love Stories in One Book, June 13, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Widow Woman (Kindle Edition)
The story of our Widow Woman Rachel and her true love Nick Dusqat is swift moving and power packed. Strong as the ranch she runs, Rachel has been widowed once when she meets Nick. Her husband was a cruel man, and Nick understands cruelty. His father and brother-in-law were both cruel men. That cruelty has scarred him emotionally.

Rachel ends up a widow twice before she finally gets to keep Nick for herself. In between she tries to keep her ranch going by marrying yet another man she does not love. She and her son and her ranch survive through the worst winter in history, at the cost of the horses she has bred for years and loves so dearly.

The other love story is that of Nicks sister Alba and her beau Davis. Alba shows up late in the book. Davis has been learning and growing under Nick's tutelage since the beginning. Their story is much sweeter than Rachel and Nick's, but just as moving.

The characters are so real you come to know them personally. It's a book you won't want to end.
