Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Campbell and Silverman delve into the psyches of men who have had to withstand the death of a spouse. Men, the book makes clear, mourn differently than women. They are less expressive, often very reticent, and this submerging of emotions can be harmful, physically as well as psychologically. The oral histories of 20 men who have lost their wives are not presented here as a curative but to show how these men have successfully dealt with the shock and devastation of suddenly being without the person they loved. Their emotions range from despair and rage, to a hollow sense of having no purpose, to incredulity over the inappropriate condolences offered by friends and family. After each history, an insightful commentary is provided by Silverman, a practicing psychologist. Written to aid the widower but equally useful for anyone with a friend or relative dealing with such a terrible loss. Brian McCombie

More About the Author

I was raised in Jackson, Michigan, birthplace of the Republican party and home to the largest prison in the world beneath one roof - two facts I always suspected were linked.

I'm the author of two novels, both of which have been adapted by others for performance - one for the stage, one for the screen - and of a nonfiction collaboration which has become, now after twenty years, a staple in its field. All of which makes me feel just fine.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great therapy for grieving men, April 9, 1999
This review is from: Widower: When Men Are Left Alone (Death, Value and Meaning Series) (Hardcover)
This booked helped me look at different ways men handled grieving and seen myself in some of the men. I seen that I wasn't crazy to have all these emotions and knew that I wasn't the only one going through this. It really is a great book for widowers to read and understand what they are going through.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book, July 18, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Widower: When Men Are Left Alone (Death, Value and Meaning Series) (Hardcover)
Each widower should read this book in which the authors list interviews with twenty bereaved men and analyze the results. A friend of mine gave it to me three months after my wife died. I was depressed and had just started couselling sessions with a therapist. The book provied me with a great deal of insight on how other men were dealing with the most devastating loss of their lives. I recommend it highly

5.0 out of 5 stars Walking In Their Shoes, May 12, 2006
This review is from: Widower: When Men Are Left Alone (Death, Value and Meaning Series) (Hardcover)
I've just completed this great book on the grieving plight of men who have lost their spouse. I'm currently walking that same path, only having lost my beloved wife a mere 13 1/2 weeks ago. I've read three books that deal with death/heaven, and so far this has been the best of the three. I plan on re-reading this again, particularly the stories about the men who are around my age (36) and how younger men deal with their grief.

A must read for any man in my (or our) situation.
