I could find no other manufacturer producing a case explicitly for 3.5" hard drives. I bought the single-pack version: Case comes with label sticker and 1" foam sticker pad. No product documentation available. There's a shiny spot on the top cover and on the spine for a label.

I agree with the 1st reviewer with the pros as well as the cons and add my own comments.

As of this writing, I've seen two other products on the net that are designed for this purpose. One product looks very similar to this one. The other, is a flip-top style like, like a canister where you slide the drive from the top.

While this product does house the drive snugly, the overall protection is just not there but I knew that from looking at its images. The box opens like a book, the top cover is slightly larger than the rest of case so if you were to stand it on its bottom, just like a book, it will not stand straight. It will be tilted slightly to the left. This means, unless you had something like the bookends on either side, the drivebox will fall easily.

The top lid, at the edges where it gets opened, I can see it breaking quickly. Its your typical plastic case.

Unfortunately, I bought the QTY 10 case so I'll use them but for the long term solution, I'm going to look for another, larger box where I can put some foam around the drive for better protection. This case does not offer any cushion type protection what so ever. What you get is a case that will house the drive, protect it from dust and getting the electronics of the drive getting poked at from being bare.

In a nutshell, the case look virtually identical to those seen at the video rentals for a VHS videotape.

[...].

I'm giving a three star for being an average product as it offers the bare essential - which is a plastic surrounding around the hard drive.

3.0 out of 5 stars A "Disney" VHS case works great., August 19, 2010

We have found that a 5 Empty Standard White Vinyl Replacement Disney VHS Boxes #VHBV30DW (Cases, Tapes, Clamshell, Clam Shell) works just right to hold 3.5" drives, although the interior space is taller than the drive.

But this extra area allows you to include a foam shock absorber above and below the drive. I recommend white polyethylene foam, not the gray polyurethane. The softer gray foam will last only ten years before breaking down and reverting to its natural sticky glue-like liquid form. Very messy and destructive. Polyethylene foam lasts forever. You can also put the drive in its anti-static bag. That alone stops the drive from moving about inside the case.

Also, the "Disney" VHS case has extended edges around its exterior perimeter that add further cushioning should the box be dropped.

The only thing lacking is a sturdy locking mechanism to hold the box shut.

Pros: It's a case. Works as advertised. Somewhat more protection than an anti-static electronics bag.

Cons: Cover extends farther than the shell sides, so case does not stand up on edge in a bookshelf. Will not securely hold a 2.5" hard drive. Still requires additional padding to ship a case-with-drive in the mail.

Notes: Case closes with a slight bulge when housing a full height ST31000340AS drive (Included foam sticker pad is probably for use with slim 1" high drives).

This seems to be a great way to store 3.5" hard drives. I work in the video production business and eat up TB drives fast, so storing them is a must but hate to use the bulky packaging box. These containers protect against static and come with labels. They stay closed and stack easily.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bare HD protection, January 31, 2010

These cases (similar to those plastic cases that held VCR tapes at Blockbuster) are sturdy and hold base HDs snugly. They include labels to identify the HD and the door securely snap shut. Best solution I have found for storing my backup drives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally, a great hard disk case!, December 12, 2011

These cases are great! I have been looking for a replacement for the clamshell cases seagate hard disks used to come in for over a year, and now I have finally found an alternative. A 3.5" sata disk fits snuggly into the case and has a good solid feel. Couldn't be happier with this product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent bare drive storage boxes, December 4, 2011

If you use bare drives for backup, you need these boxes. They are very sturdy. They hold the drive inside rock solid and secure. The box latches do not come open even if dropped. You do need good fingernails to open the box. I highly recommend them.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not for daily use, September 2, 2011

The Wiebetech DriveBox might be fine for storing a hard disk on a bookshelf, but it does not hold up to everyday use. After opening and closing my DriveBox every weekday for 9 months, one of the two latches broke. Shortly after that I noticed that the bottom of the box was cracking in two places due to the slight pinch required to open it up (see my photo).

Before buying this product I was most doubtful about the living hinge holding up. The hinge is fine. I never expected the box to crack - not this soon.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive backup hard disk protection, January 19, 2011

These bare hard disk cases are a useful and inexpensive way to protect your backup hard disks if you are using an external eSATA hard disk docking station like the Thermaltake to back up your data or clone hard disks and then transport the backup drives off premises. I am quite satisfied with them although I simply stack the drives in a drawer until it's time to reuse them for later backups.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like Books!, February 20, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: DriveBox 10 pack (Electronics)
These can be stood on a shelf like books, and look nice. The drive tucks in securely and easily between interior plastic nubs.

The lock tabs are a little annoying; they require two hands.

Also, no soft/foam padding, so these are NOT designed for constant transporting. They're for putting on a shelf.

For my purposes they're great: I backup my family photos/videos onto them, take the backups off-site, and put 'em on a shelf for three months. (I do on-site backups more often.)

If you plan to carry or access the drive on a frequent basis (daily or weekly), I'd look for something with more padding and a friendlier locking system. But if your timeline is like once-a-month or once-a-year, these should fit the bill nicely.
