Editorial Reviews

Review

You're definitely going to want to add this emotional rollercoaster of a book to your "to read" pile. I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

If you share my love for Austenesque novels, particularly ones have tones that are true-to-period, both in style and in plot choices, A Wife for Mr. Darcy will be a fine choice for you. Mary Lydon Simonsen brings new ideas and plot twists to this classic tale, but the characters stay true to their original incarnations. Once again Mary has produced excellent work. I count this title among my recent favorites and look forward to more work from this talented author.

A Wife for Mr. Darcy is a quick read that allows readers to revisit their favorite characters, see more of Austen's characters who were more on the sidelines in the original, and be introduced to new and interesting characters.

If you are the mood to read about Darcy being embroiled in a love triangle, Bingley and Jane combating some unmanageable little hellions, and the profligate Lord Fitzwilliam constantly causing mayhem and aggravation, A Wife for Mr. Darcyis the novel for you! Hilarious, absorbing, and unique - A Wife for Mr. Darcy, is my new favorite Mary Lydon Simonsen novel! I highly recommend!

A Wife for Mr. Darcy was so engrossing that I truly feared for the happiness of Darcy and Elizabeth, and I was so wrapped up in the whole mess with Miss Montford that I didn't even miss all the chaos associated with Lady Catherine, who did not make an appearance. Simonsen does a wonderful job making Austen's characters her own, and the addition of her original characters make for a richer read. I can't wait to see where she takes the Darcys, the Bingleys, and the Bennets next.

Yet another brilliant Austen sequel by Mary Lydon Simonsen! By the way, can I just fawn over the cover? Gah, so beautiful!

Mary Lydon Simonsen is one of my favorite Jane Austen writers ever. Aside from Jane herself, of course. She always captures the "What If?" perfectly and adds just a bit of angst and humor as well. All of that awesomeness comes together perfectly in A Wife For Mr. Darcy.

This is a wonderful remake of the famous Jane Austen story that has touched the hearts of millions through the years. I think all of her fans will be thrilled with the results. Mr. Darcy and Miss Elizabeth will enthrall you with their dry wit and sarcastic humor. Elizabeth will win you over with her point blank, no nonsense attitude. You will follow Darcy as he loses his heart to one he should not have. You know how society dictates that he marry into his own class. This is a must read for all the Jane Austen fans out there or if you just enjoy great historical fiction. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Absolutely! This is one of my favorite P&P variations to date and for anyone that remotely loves Austen and her regency stories would have a great time immersing themselves into Darcy and Lizzy's life for an afternoon!!

Overall I thought this book was good. I liked the direction the storyline took us. I thought it was a good alternative to the original story. I love the conspirators used to bring Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy together.

More About the Author

I have been a fan of Jane Austen since I was in high school in the 1960s and always wanted to write an Austen re-imagining. That happened in 2008 with the publication of my first novel, Searching for Pemberley, for Sourcebooks. Three other books for Sourcebooks followed: The Perfect Bride for Mr. Darcy, A Wife for Mr. Darcy, and Mr. Darcy's Bite. In 2012, I started to self-publish my Austen stories. They include the time-travel novels, Another Place in Time and Becoming Elizabeth Darcy, historical romances, When They Fall in Love and Darcy on the Hudson, and a paranormal story, Mr. Darcy's Bite, as well as several traditional Austenesque novels and novellas.

Also in 2012, I spread my wings and published my first mystery, a novella, Three's A Crowd, introducing the character of Detective Patrick Shea of London's Metropolitan Police. Three's A Crowd is the prequel to A Killing in Kensington and A Death in Hampden.

After retiring from a career as a legal secretary in Dallas, I had a second career as a special education assistant in the Howard County, Maryland and Peoria, Arizona school districts. I enjoyed both careers, but I'm really enjoying being an author more than anything I have ever done.

The fourth novel in the Patrick Shea mystery series, Dying to Write, will be released this spring.

Good story line and the characters are well thought out.

In this version, the usually combative Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett like one another from the beginning, but social status and another woman stand in their way.

They also did not stay true to the original characters, which is a huge pet peeve for me when reading variation stories.

As an avid Austenite, I try to read all Pride and Prejudice sequels, variations, and modernizations. My favorites are the variations, the what-if stories that take my favorite literary couple on an alternate road to their happy fate. Mary Lydon Simonsen writes some of the best variations, and this book is no exception.

In this delightful novel, Simonsen shows us what might have happened had Mr. Darcy, realizing Elizabeth Bennett has overheard his remark about her lack of allure as a dance partner, goes to her and apologizes. In this version, the usually combative Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennett like one another from the beginning, but social status and another woman stand in their way.

I love the way Simonsen develops some of the lesser characters from the original. Her Georgiana Darcy is slightly older than Austen's, having just had her social debut, and is more confident and a bit devious. A very nice companion to the delightful Elizabeth Bennett. The devious hijinks of Georgiana, her fun-loving cousin, Col. Fitzwilliam (who, let's face it, is a favorite of almost every P&P fan), and a new character, the Colonel's wonderfully quirky and rakish older brother, bring in the humor you expect from Austen and provide an appropriate counter-balance to Darcy's serious, duty-and-honor approach to life.

I devoured this book in 24 hours and can only hope there will be a sequel. I really want to know what happens next to this wonderful cast of characters.

I am a big fan of Jane Austen and of many of the variation stories that have been published. While there are many high quality variations out there, this one fell short. I think the premise was very interesting and quite original, but this book has two major problems- first, the story was never fully developed, and second, the characters fall flat.
I had hopes for this story when I read the description- Mr. Darcy acknowledges his error in insulting Elizabeth at the Meryton assembly and apologizes, allowing an attraction to develop much earlier than in the original. The only problem is that Mr. Darcy has already shown interest to a lady of the ton and while he does not care for her, feels that his honor is engaged and that his duty to his family must take priority over his attraction to Elizabeth. The plot, unfortunately, never goes any deeper than the superficial. The story is more a telling of events than an exploration of the thoughts and emotions involved. Everything becomes very predictable and all the conflicts are easily resolved. I have read two other books by this author, Darcy and Elizabeth: The Language of the Fan, and For all the Wrong Reasons, and this is a common problem in her work. I actually went back to the author's Amazon page to make sure that the books were not intended for teens instead of adults.
As far as the characters go, they were not developed any more than the plot. They also did not stay true to the original characters, which is a huge pet peeve for me when reading variation stories. The best variations or sequels keep the same characters and tone that the original stories set, they simply explore what might happen afterward, or what might have happened if certain events had changed.

I had this book on preorder for several months and it was worth the wait. I enjoy all of Ms. Simonsen's book and this is another very good read. The story line follows Darcy as he strugles between his heart and family pride and duty. He starts a relationship before he meets Elizabeth. Then he meets her and his world is turned upside down. The book goes through the twist and turns of our heroes hopefully finding their happily ever after.A Wife for Mr. Darcy

There seems to be no limit to the creative imaginings of Mary Lydon Simonsen! This is the fourth novel I have read and enjoyed by Ms. Simonsen and I'm just amazed at how wholly unique and original each of her novels are! In this Pride and Prejudice retelling, Ms. Simonsen steers the Pride and Prejudice gang off course very early in the novel, creating a new and considerably divergent path for these beloved characters to traverse. How does she do this? By making a very remorseful and uncomfortable Mr. Darcy come and apologize to Elizabeth Bennet the day after the Meryton Assembly.

Even though Darcy finds himself delighting in Elizabeth's company and reveling in her fresh and frank conversation, Darcy knows he can not pursue her. One reason is because he feels it is his duty to Pemberley and to his sister, Georgiana to marry a woman from an old aristocratic family that is his social equal. The other reason is because he's already started courting another woman in town! What a predicament! What can Darcy do when the woman he doesn't love is expecting his proposal, and the woman he does love has resigned herself to the fact that he is unavailable?

Enter: Georgiana, Colonel Fitzwilliam, Lord Fitzwilliam, and Anne de Bourgh!

Similar to The Perfect Bride for Mr. Darcy, Darcy and Elizabeth receive some much needed assistance from the schemes and manipulations of Darcy's meddling and well-meaning relatives. Through these characters and their clever machinations, Ms. Simonsen's penchant for humor and satire really shine! Especially when it comes to characters such as Lord Fitzwilliam and the Crenshaw children, pure comedic genius! These character additions aren't the only changes readers will find.
