UPDATE REVIEW (Upgrade from 3 stars to 5 stars):
I had rated this 3 stars. Now, a year later, I've been through some situations where I had to do a LOT of twisting work and I've discovered that Wiha really knows what ergonomic is all about. I was overly critical of the jaw lock (which only keeps it closed) and the light construction, but this is NOT a clamp. After a couple hundred wrist twists, I've now concluded that the lock is only to keep it from springing open in your tool pouch, that the openning spring is vital once your wrist gets exhausted and that the light weight is like a racing car, sparing your wrist through many rapids twists and turns. I hope no one avoided this excellent product because of my initial skewed viewpoint. Sorry, Wiha. Sorry, World. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ORIGINAL REVIEW (2009): I enjoy the quality and reliability and design of Wiha insulated tools. This sounds like a great product, especially when working through a lot of wiring requiring a lot of wrist work. I was especially drawn to the jaw lock, expecting it to allow this plier to function as an insulated clamp. Nope. The lock is just a simple slide lock to keep the spring from opening the pliers when stowed. So, what have I got? Pluses: + A pair of spring-return (spring-openning) pliers. + Good well shaped jaws, operated by a high-strength plastic lever system. Minuses: - Oddball shape which doesn't stow well with other tools in my electrian's bag. - A design which places my hand much closer to the conductive jaws than any other Wiha insulated tools, reducing my confidence in the design. - High price. Too high, considering the construction and feel. Like everybody else, I'm used to hooking my small finger inside standard pliers to open them, so in truth, all I've achieved is overspending about $5-$8 relative to buying the more solid, better built, superb Wiha insulated long nose pliers #32808. Wiha 32808 Insulated Long Nose Pliers, 8 Inches, 1000 Volt Rated I'm deducting one star because a jaw lock should function as a clamp and one star because construction does not feel as solid as all my other Wiha stuff.
