5.0 out of 5 stars Great Magnetizer/OK Demagnetizer
This is a simple, inexpensive device that really works well, within limitations. The magnetizer works great. Slowly inserting a tool (made of a metal capable of being magnetized) into the + chamber and then slowly retracting it readily magnetizes it. Works great when you want screwdrivers to grab onto screws.

Demagnetizing a tool, however, is more difficult...

2.0 out of 5 stars ok - but rate it as below average
I needed another magnetizer, as the one I have is over 20 years old and I lost half of it - there was a rubber band type attachment holding the two pieces together. I bought this hoping it would be better then the half of the 20 year old metal one - I was disappointed. It works, but not as good as the half of the 20 year old one. I wonder if I removed the green casing, it...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Magnetizer/OK Demagnetizer, December 6, 2010

This review is from: Wiha Tools Magnetizer/Demagnetizer (Tools & Home Improvement)

Demagnetizing a tool, however, is more difficult. To thoroughly demagnetize a tool, you probably need an electromagnetic degaussing coil. This much simpler device is OK, but a bit tricky to use. As others have noted, there are no instructions included. The - chamber has a series of steps, and it's not obvious what their purpose is. I contacted Wiha tech support, and they responded promptly (two service reps sent e-mail). Below are their instructions. It is important to note that the tool tip can be so strongly magnetic that the screw or other part it touches can itself become magnetized. So to test the demagnetizer, you need to test the demagnetized tip on a fresh (previously unmagnetized) part; otherwise, if the part itself is magnetized, you would incorrectly conclude that the demagnetizer didn't work.

From Wiha tech support:

"You put the screwdriver blade slowly in and out of the + side to magnetize and slowly in and out of the - side to demagnetize.

If you are having trouble demagnetizing put the blade in slowly at the top of the demagnetizing side, walk it down the steps and then remove.

Magnetism transfers so you need to be careful to not keep magnetized and demagnetized items together. Parts under 1" in length or 1/8" diameter may not demagnetize. (Do not use a paper clip to check if a tool is demagnetized, because of the size once it is magnetized it cannot be demagnetized and transfers the magnetism back to the other tool.)

Also if you are trying to demag an item with larger mass it will take repeated attempts to demag it."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great gadget, June 3, 2010

This is a great gadget to have in the field or at your bench. It is very compact and super simple to use. I got it because I frequently work with teeny (0 & 00) screws and having a magnetized driver makes life so much easier. It is also wonderful with #2 and #3 bits if you're working in a cramped space and don't have enough hands to hold the fastener, the tool, and the item you're trying to install.

This magnitizer is not a toy. It magnitizes my screw drivers so I can pick up metal screws. Excellent bargain.

The Wiha Magnetizer/Demagnetizer contains C8 Ceramic Magnets. The magnets are enclosed in a very durable plastic housing.
Simply place the tool you wish to magnetize in the Magnetize slot, allow it to "stick" to the inside of the slot, and spin it.
To Demagnetize place the tool you wish to demagnetize in the Demagnetize slot, allow it to "stick" to the inside, and spin it.
The Wiha Magnetizer/Demagnetizer worked great on all the tools I tested it on.

This is a very nice, compact, magnetizer/demagnetizer that does its job. It is a good, easy to spot color when placed in a black tool bag. For the price, it is well worth it!

Wiha is a top quality German tool maker and design and style always seem to appear to be a top priority w/ their tools. This magnet happens to be made in the USA and like most other Wiha products is nice to look at and very functional. It may seem funny to some (such as "why do you need that"), but I just used it when I was installing a new Hunter ceiling fan.

Installing ceiling fans is first of all made easier by using a handheld power screwdriver and (as I found out) one of these Wiha magnetizers. I simply placed the magnetizer in my pocket and then ran either the flat head or philips head driver through the magnetizer and then when mounting overhead bolts such as the ones that hold the shaft in place, having the tips magnetized was a big time-saver.

I really didn't bother much with the demagnetizer, but for $5, I do highly recommend this Wiha product for those times when you really need to hold a bolt or screw in place.

In case it wasn't obvious, this unit is made in the USA and very high quality. It is large enough to accommodate even the largest screwdrivers and most small wrenches (i.e. ignition wrenches and similar).

This thing feels solid, has good heft to it and works flawlessly. I tried it on several screwdrivers that were magnetized and it removed the magnetism completely with only a few passes through the opening. This is much better than other (de)magnetizers I have used in the past and it was absolutely worth the price. If you've only tried the cheap ones in the past, like the one that I had before which literally fell apart, give this one a shot and you won't ever go back to the low quality units.

Again, I highly recommend this. It's a solid unit, high quality, well made (in the USA!) and will last a lifetime. I've already gotten my money's worth and I've only had it a few hours.

When you are dealing with small screws on an expensive laptop, you really don't want to loose them. This helps. It doesn't replace being careful. but it helps.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for Precision Work!, June 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wiha Tools Magnetizer/Demagnetizer (Tools & Home Improvement)
I purchased this magnetizer because I frequently work with products that require precision installation with small screws. One of my chores is to dismantle my barber's clippers for cleaning, but the screws were so small they were easy to get off, but hard to put back on and it would basically take a lot of time to get this done. I also own a remote control helicopter that will periodically require me to change parts with small screws. I dreaded having to replace a part simply because it was too difficult to screw the parts back on because the screws kept falling on the floor. This magnetizer allowed me to magnetize my own precision jeweler's screwdrivers within seconds so the tiny screws now stick to the screwdriver tips and installation of small parts is a snap. I've actually started cutting my hair more often, because dismantling and reassembling the clippers for cleaning is so easy and quick now. I look forward to changing parts on my model helicopter now. The magnetized screw drivers work perfectly for small short screws that are difficult to get started installing by hand. Longer heavier screws will have a weaker bond, but these screws can easily be started by hand anyway!

This product is great even if you want to maintain the magnetic force on existing smaller magnetic tools. I look forward to using this product when I need to get inside my laptop PC and desktop PC. I highly recommend this product for magnetizing precision tools for precision work!
