5.0 out of 5 stars Way better then white classic controller January 20, 2010
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
I have this controller and the original white classic controller. Even with an optional Nyko kit (adds grips to classic controller), the original white classic controller felt really awkward. The black controller is a lot more PS2 like, especially with the shoulder button layout (which is a good thing). Overall, very good controller for playing older Nintendo (virtual console, gamecube) games on the Wii.

5.0 out of 5 stars An ideal, versatile controller January 2, 2015
This is a fantastic controller, plain and simple!
It is genuine Nintendo (better than off-brands, in my opinion) and even though it's the Japanese one, it really is identical to the US one. The instructions are in Japanese, but there are a few diagrams anyone can understand. Really though, this controller is so simple you don't need instructions: you plug it into the bottom of a Wii remote where the Nunchuk usually connects, and it runs off of the remote's batteries. Boom. Setup complete.

As for the controller itself, it is nearly perfect. It has a real solid feel without being too heavy and bulky. The front is a glossy finish and the backside is matte with a bit of texture, ideal for keeping a good grip on the thing. It is very comfortable to use, even for extended periods of time.
So what games can you use this on? See below...

On the Wii U:
- All NES Virtual Console games
- All SNES Virtual Console games
- Pretty sure you can use this on all Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games
- Certain Wii U retail games (like Super Mario 3D World - see individual games themselves for controllers supported)

On the Wii:
- All NES, SNES, and N64 Virtual Console games
- Certain Wii retail games (like Super Smash Bros - again, check to see what games support what controllers)
- Not sure if you can use this with Gamecube games on Wii.

So, this controller can be used in a really wide variety of games. The controller is designed to mimic the Nintendo controllers of old, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that retro games control very well on it. N64 games are maybe a bit awkward since the old Z-button on the N64 controller seems to be mapped to the L-button on this controller, but it's not bad once you get used to it.

5.0 out of 5 stars The same for less!! May 11, 2014

I was surprised to find that the Japanese version of the controller was $12 less than the American version. They look and function exactly the same. The controller works perfectly and there really is not much else to say except don't waste your money on the US version.

Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Good replacement compared to the regular classic controller. Also works flawless on US version of the Wii. Price tag is kinda high, but that is probably due to the fact that it is a imported product.

5.0 out of 5 stars Last Wireless Classic Controller for Wii and Wii U September 18, 2014
Verified Purchase
Great Classic Controller for the Wii and Wii U. What I like about this controller in particular is that it's cross compatible and doesn't require batteries. It says it's the Japanese version, and the packaging is in Japanese, but the text on the controller is in English. Not that a regular Nintendo user would have issues with buttons being labeled differently. This is a great buy! Nintendo doesn't manufacture this version any more so get one while you can!

4.0 out of 5 stars Modified version of the Classic controller. January 21, 2010

Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
For those of you who grew up with the PS2 and Xbox this controller mimics that design and feel. The classic controller is a nice memory from the past but I like how the cord on the Japanese version extends from the outside instead of from the inside like the U.S. Classic controller. The controller feels solid and well built. I recommend this controller for anyone who's looking for an alternative to the U.S. Classic controller

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed with d-pad August 10, 2014
By Nate P.

I bought this to play a particular hard to find Wii JRPG on our new Wii U. While this controller works, frequently when pressing left on the diagonal pad, the controller will respond with up instead. This is incredibly frustrating when trying to fight bosses and ultimately very distracting. I'm not sure if this is a flawed design on Nintendo's part or if I received a a faulty controller.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Classic Games on Wii June 18, 2014
Verified Purchase
The controllers came in mint condition and looked factory-grade new. They were shiny black, paint was great and not a chip anywhere so definitely new. They came in their own individual boxes (I bought 2) and they worked perfect with the Wii controllers. We were able to immediately use them and play (no charging needed for these) and they worked flawlessly on the classic Wii games that I had bought (specifically Super Mario World and Mario Kart). I absolutely love these controllers and if you're worried bout the instructions being in Japanese, it doesn't matter cuz they show a picture for assembly (plug into bottom of Wii remote). Great buy, Love them, got them faster than expected and they're completely new and legit!
