Should have been included onboard!,

After first setting up my wii and then spending about 4 hours trying to connect it to my wireless router, I gave up and purchased this adapter.
The Wii internal wireless was incompatible with my DLink 802.11g router. In order to even get the Wii to partially connect to the Internet, I had to disable wireless encryption and force channel 11 (which is very overused in my apartment complex and was pretty much required by Nintendo support). After researching why my Wii refused to connect on Nintendo's site I found a page that stated my particular version of my router for some reason unknown to me is incompatible with the Wii even though every other wireless gadget I own even down to a pocket PC works perfectly fine even with security at its maximum. Deciding that the Nintendo wireless is pretty much useless I purchased this adapter. In 1 minute I was online and working fine ever since. Its also much nicer being wired since I pretty much totally dislike wireless connections. Nintendo definitely should have included this onboard.

When it comes to the Nintendo Wii, many gamers have wanted to fins the best ways of downloading games from the internet. Although you can definitely get it through a Wi-Fi router, some of them don't do the job, where you'd have to check with Nintendo. While there are also other ways besides router to get you to go online for your favorite downloads. This Lan adapter from Datel, the same company that developed the Action Replay is very simple and easy to install. You simply plug it into the back of your USB ports on the system, and connect it to your cable or DSL modem. Although it is simple to operate. it does a few problems when the system overheats. nevertheless, it is a good buy for anyone who has a broadband connection, and wants to play hard online with the Wii.

This adapter worked well out of the box. I went to the network config and set up the Wii to use the wired connection and it connected without any issues. Never had an issue with the adapter.
I also found that it works well for connecting computers to the network when an ethernet port is not available. I used it to connect my OLPC to the network and it worked great.

This does exactly what it says it will do, and even comes with a 6 foot ethernet cable. If that isn't long enough, the adapter has a wire on itself a few feet long as well. Overall, it gets the job done just as would be expected.

The Intec LAN Adapter for the Wii is the straightforward way to get your Nintendo online. It is simple: just plug one end of the adapter into one of the USB slots on your Wii, plug the other end into your DSL or cable modem, and you're set!
The big advantage of the Intec LAN adapter over Nintendo's Wi-Fi USB connector is that Intec's adapter is computer independent (because it doesn't go through your computer); Nintendo's Wi-Fi connector, on the other hand, doesn't work with many firewalls, and is Windows-specific (XP and, with an update, possibly Vista). If you're using a Mac or the wrong firewall (such as ZoneAlarm), the Intec adapter or an 802.11g-compliant wireless Wi-Fi router are your two best bets for connecting your Wii to the internet in areas without free Wi-Fi coverage. The disadvantage of this product over the wireless options mentioned above is that it only connects your Wii to the internet - your Nintendo DS, if you have one, will have to fend for itself when it comes to finding a connection. For some people, this will be fine; for others (especially Pokemon players), this will be unacceptable.

First -- the negative review is because the unit stopped working -- I received exactly what I ordered and it worked well with my wii -- I purchased the unit to watch Netflix on my TV through the wii.
I don't know if you can only use the Nintendo created LAN adaptor with the wii as they say or if this was a poorly made unit. However, it simply stopped working after 30 days. I stopped using the unit one night and went to use it again two nights later and it was completely broken -- no power, no light, nothing. There were no visible defects with the unit, I hadn't misused it, I am the only person who uses it and have no pets who could have chewed the wire or anything. Either way I wanted to insure that anyone else thinking about purchasing this item knew about my experience -- I may just be bad luck on my part -- but just in case.

I have wireless in my house but my Wii is in an entertainment cabinet where it doesn't have consistent wireless connectivity. Downloading updates or games from the shopping channel would almost always time out :(
The LAN adapter works as advertised and is very easy to install.

Picked this up since I'm on a college campus and not allowed to run a wireless router in my dorm. Just felt the need to explain why anybody would even need this thing, with the Wii having 802.11G built-in.
Anyway, there's not much to say. Opened it up, hooked it to the back of the Wii, ran the included cable to my network port, then switched my connection to "Wired" from "Wireless" int he Wii Internet options. Done. WiiConnect24 works fine, online games have been working fine, no issues. The only thing I noticed is that I wasn't able to find the MAC address for the adapter in the menu (I could still find the wireless one). Didn't search too hard, because I just turned off my filter to get it then turned filtering back on with this device added. I'd wager it's probably in there somewhere. I just don't remember it being anywhere that I'd think to look. Oh, and the ugly beige cord included. I mean, obviously it's just a cheap pack-in, but you'd think they try to find some white or something to match the adapter/Wii. Not a big deal, though, and really I'm just glad they threw in a cord at all. If, for whatever reason, you need to hook your Wii up the old-fashioned way, this should fit your need perfectly.

Purchased this b/c my FIFA 2009 online game playing is so incredibly bad that I began to wonder if perhaps the WIFI connection was just too slow to support the graphics (even though it seems more than capable on every other game I've played online). As luck would have it... it turns out that the FIFA 2009 online just sucks! The LAN adapter seems to work fine, but I can't say that I notice any measurable performance change. Will soon be plugging it into new gigabit switch. I don't expect any speed improvements, but at least I will feel more certain that I am getting the maximum possible speed over this adapter.

I bought one of these used - but still in the box. It worked great. If you can change a light bulb, you can handle this. As far as getting the Wii up and running on the internet there are instructions in the Wii manuals to walk you through that - it's pretty straight forward. This product works just fine though.
