4.0 out of 5 stars It's all about the games! February 14, 2014
I was trying to rack my brain on all the hate behind this console. But then I realized, taking out the Gamecube ports, online, and SD Card, really affect one game the most: Super Smash Brothers. If you are the type of casual gamer that just wants this console to get your fill of Mario, then this console is just fine. The console is not only a steal, especially with Mario Kart included, but many of the Wii hits are at great prices as well.

One thing I do like about this Wii is the top-loading disc drive rather the dependence on motors to insert and eject discs, which are bound to stop working. Open the lid, pop the disc in, shut the lid and you're good to go. Simple and fool-proof enough for kids.

I also liked that it came with the Wii Motion Plus Remote with rubber cover, nunchuck, and even AA batteries. So, Nintendo did give you everything to get you up and running right away.

Oh, just to confirm it does have built-in memory for game-saves. It seems like you will have to go through a LOT of games before it finally runs out.

Ok, so what's wrong with this model? The most glaring problem is the proprietary composite cable that it comes with. The Wii could do 480p with a special component cable that was strangely rare to purchase. However, with composite, you will only get 480i. What does this mean? It probably won't be the clearest image you will see. If you are picky about graphics and absolutely pristine images on your 60" HDTV, then not even the normal Wii will help you there.

Before you buy this, note that the only video cable that works is the one in the box, that's it. It's probably safe to assume that no 3rd party peripherals that plug into the Wii, no wi-fi or ethernet devices, etc, will work with this Wii Mini.

5.0 out of 5 stars THANK YOU Nintendo! Exactly what I needed! December 14, 2013
By Melissa
Perfect for young kids who are just getting into gaming!

Let me start off by saying, if you are a hard-core gamer this console is obviously not for you, but this $99 package was exactly what I needed for a 6-year-old who is just getting into video games. I did not want to spend between $200-$500 for a top-of-line cutting edge console with all the bells and whistles for a 6-year-old who doesn't need those features and doesn't have a clue what 1080p means. By the time my 6-year-old does get into more advanced gaming and wants multi-player features and internet download capabilities, no-doubt there will be a new, fancier video game console than the Wii U or the XBOX One. He certainly doesn't need "backwards capability" since he's new to video games or wi-fi for Netflix and internet downloads.

I purchased my Wii Mini on December 13th from TRU for $99 including the Mario Kart. I was concerned about whether I would be able to hook this up to my Samsung LCD HDTV since some of the reviews claim it CAN'T be hooked up to an HDTV. To avoid a Christmas morning fiasco, I went ahead and opened the box, and this literally took me about 30 seconds to hook up to my television. It couldn't have been easier. Seriously, a monkey could do it. You put the yellow cord in the yellow hole, white cord in the white hole, red in the red. It's really that simple. I have no idea how every brand of LCD flat panel is designed, but on my Samsung the plug holes were located right on the side of the television. Very easy to access. See the photo I've included for a picture of the television hook-up. Other than that, it was just plugging it into the outlet and installing the included AA batteries in the remote. I actually played a little Mario Kart just to see what it was like and had a blast.

4.0 out of 5 stars $100 December 14, 2012
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
It's a good product. It is a Wii, with no gamecube support and no online access. I would like to point out that it is currently being sold elsewhere for $100. Anyone charging more than that at the time of this review is trying to ripping you off.

I am not a person that ever writes reviews, but after purchasing this item from Walmart and returning it only a few days later there is definitely information the consumer needs to know before buying. We previously had a Wii that our kids loved, but got rid of it because they were "loved" the Kinect in the store. Fast forward a few years, we wanted to go back to the Wii because the Kinect just never was what they thought it would be. Normally I do allot of research before buying anything but having previously had a Wii, I did not do research as to exactly what the "Wii Mini" actually was because I thought I knew what the Nintendo product. Ultimately this is my responsibility, but Nintendo does not make it known exactly what they removed (and or a while even had their customer service denying that some of what was removed was actually removed). My trust in doing no research was enhanced by Nintendo stopping production of "normal" Wii's and only making the Mini version, so I wrongfully assumed it was just a smaller version of the previous Wii.

As a few others have mentioned this is an extremely stripped down version of the Wii. If you don't mind giving up what you are giving up, than this should be a fine purchase, but you should go into this purchase with your eyes wide open.
