Product Description

The Nintendo Wii is the only major gaming console that does not have a HDMI output port. The Wii console's output resolution is only 480p, HDMI is now the standard AV interface on amplifiers, switchers and TV's; the lack of an HDMI output on the Wiii makes installations and wiring more complex and troublesome. Wii gamers and systems integrators such as ourselves have been waiting for a convenient Wii HDMI adapter for years, now the wii to HDMI wait is over. The Wii2HDMI adapter converts the standard Wii output into an HDMI 1.3 compatible device allowing audio and video to be carried over a single HDMI cable. It also offers an integrated 3.5mm audio output. This adapter up converts the Wii standard 480i/p componsite / component video signal and analogue audio signal into HDMI digital output, 720P or 1080P. The Wii2HDMI adapter is very simple to use and operate, there are no controls or power adapter, basically just plug it into the back of the Wii, plug in an HDMI cable and you're done! Simple, easy and effective. The Wii2HDMI converts your Wii video and audio output to full digital HDMI format. It supports all Wii display modes including: NTSC 480i, 480p, PAL 576i . With just the use of one HDMI cable you could connect your Wii gaming console to your HDTV, without losing any quality in video and audio signals, as the Wii2HDMI converter dynamically switches or converts your analog content to digital HDMI format. The HDMI output is either 720P (default) or 1080P, please make sure your TV can support 720P or 1080P. The 720P to 1080P needle push switch (hole) is located on the front side at the lower left corner below "Wii2HDMI" print, not the hole next to the female HDMI output socket. To switch between 720P and 1080P outputs, use a needle to push and hold for 1 second then release.

3.0 out of 5 stars A long (but worthwhile) review March 6, 2012
I apologize for the lengthy review. But I felt it was necessary that someone that did the research let you, the buyer, know beforehand EXACTLY what you're in for when purchasing this product.

Let's get the obvious out of the way: The Wii is not capable of outputting a High Definition picture. It's only capable of Enhanced Definition TV (EDTV) which means it can run most games in the Wii and Gamecube Libraries in 480 Progressive Scan.

Having said that, do NOT expect that this adapter will magically turn the Wii's last-generation graphics into something comparable to the PS3/XB360's visual output.

Let's weigh out the positives and negatives of this product so that you can make a definite decision if this is worth the investment.

TIP: Most people think that having the best possible connection will automatically give you the best visual experience. However, to get the best picture quality, it's actually a balance between your TV settings as well as having the highest video output you can get out of your electronic devices. I suggest you turn off ALL extra picture processing to get the PUREST video output possible. That means turn off edge enhancement, motion plus, dynamic contrast, etc. Trust me when I say you'll be doing yourself a HUGE favor.

NOW... onto the review:

- HDMI output!: These days, most newer TVs lack built in Component/Composite connections. I myself have a Samsung LED Smart TV which requires an adapter (packaged with the TV) to plug Component/Composite cables into it. It's VERY ugly, even WITH proper cable management. The Wii HDMI adapter will allow you to employ the use of a single HDMI cable, which is absolutely great in terms of cleaning up the wiring behind your TV.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works Wonderfully!! October 27, 2011

I imported a copy of Pikmin 2 for the wii which won't work on an ntsc system without component cables... or this adapter! Through HDMI the game works wondefully. It is not an upconverter, but that is not why I wanted it. I bought this so that my wii would be compatible with my computer monitor that only takes HDMI and vga, it works wonderfully for that purpose. As another review has stated, it gets "hot" really it's only slightly warm, and I've played the wii for right at... 16 hours straight and the thing hasn't caught fire so I'm sure it's safe! It's a wonderful little piece of equipment and I would reccomend to anyone that wants a connection for their wii to work with something like a computer monitor or just to lessen the mess of cables.

The purpose of this however is not to improve the picture so really it doesn't matter, but one more thing, the tv or monitor will recognize this as a 720p signal so you should be able to use on pal or ntsc systems.

3.0 out of 5 stars Does what it's technically supposed to. August 25, 2011

Like a lot of other people have said, this is NOT an HDMI upconverter - it only converts the analog 480p signal to digital 480p. That being said, I was a little surprised that the picture quality looked a little better than it did with my component cables (but then, that may have been the TV's handiwork). It did do a good job of reducing the clutter behind the TV, and it will significantly reduce the amount of cable swapping needed, since we only have one component input for our TV, but this setup cost about twice as much as the component adapter, after buying the HDMI cable to go with it.

What I really bought this for, though, is that I play a lot of rhythm games that can't be calibrated in-game and there's a noticeable lag between the Wii and the TV, making these games frustrating at best and unplayable at worst. I was hoping that this converter might reduce the amount of processing that the TV does to make the image prettier. I've turned off all of the fancy graphics settings on the TV I could find, but I've seen no difference in lag between the Wii2HDMI adapter and the component, or even composite, cables.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is a keeper January 14, 2012

At first I unpacked the device from the simple and modest packaging the converter came in. I was surprised there was no directions on installing or configuring the converter. However the device looked simple with a Wii male fitting on one end and and HDMI female fitting on the other. In minutes I had this product unpacked, installed and functioning.

Once I had the converter installed I switched on my Wii and my TV and I had an upscaled Wii signal (720p) on the HDMI input on my TV. However the picture quality was not that improved from the 480p out of the Wii's composite cable. I was disappointed. I went back to the packaging and read that the converter could upscale to 1080p. It took me reading another review to figure out that the switch between resolutions (720p and 1080p) is the paperclip hole just below the "H" in the HDMI Converter label. It switched while connected and my TV refreshed and indicated the signal was now 1080p, yet the picture was not that improved. At this point I considered returning the product and purchasing a Wii component cable for significantly less money. Determined to make this work, I went to the Wii settings menu and then to TV resolution and switched from the standard TV to HDTV/EDTV option. No real difference. Frustrated, tired and ready to send this device back, I thought I would sleep on it before I did anything. My wife launched a game and this is where the improved resolution was noticed. The picture quality was far improved from the main Wii menu I was using to judge the picture quality as I installed the unit.

In short: use a pin/paper clip to set the resolution you want on the converter. Set the Wii output resolution to the HDTV/EDTV setting and enjoy your favorite games and movies on your Wii in hi definition.

Pros: unit works as advertised. Easy hookup and easy to configure.
Cons: no directions on installation or configuration

There's nothing to it. Plug it into your Wii. Plug and HDMI from your TV into this device. It's over! I'm even using the headphone jack to send audio to my old receiver.
