5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for the average birder, February 21, 2005
This review is from: Wild Bird Guide: Downy Woodpecker (Wild Bird Guides) (Paperback)
The downy woodpecker is the smallest and one of the most common woodpeckers in North America. It is a bird that most every birder, regardless of expertise, has watched with great interest, in particular during the winter. It is only fitting, then, that it should be profiled in one of the first books in this excellent series. The book covers all aspects of the downy's life-cycle in a clear and well written manner, and almost every page has at least one colour photo to accompany what is being discussed. This book, therefore, is an excellent resource for those who want a more indepth understanding of the species, but who lack the desire to subject themselves to reading scientific studies. My only complaint with the book is that in a few instances the author was repetative, in particular in regards to flocking and nest-site selection and excavation. The book is also 108 pages plus references and index, not 96 pages as stated by Amazon under "product details".

5.0 out of 5 stars Lots of Information, February 1, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Wild Bird Guide: Downy Woodpecker (Wild Bird Guides) (Paperback)
This book is part of a wonderful series (Wild Bird Guides). The book is dedicated soley to downy woodpeckers and gives information about feeding, nesting, and breeding. After reading this book, backyard birdwatching is even more enjoyable because you gain the knowledge to understand bird behavior better. Beautiful photographs give the reader close up views not possible in the wild.

5.0 out of 5 stars Another excellent book in this series, September 11, 2009

This review is from: Wild Bird Guide: Downy Woodpecker (Wild Bird Guides) (Paperback)
I own three books in the series, all of which are excellent, the amount of readable, entertaining, and informative material, as well as the excellent photographs, is first rate. Any bird lover and or amatuer naturalist will want to add this series to their library.
