This collection of 16 excerpts from writings about manned flight includes well-known works by Saint-Exup?ry, Michael Collins, Martin Amis, Tom Wolfe, and Charles Lindbergh as well as lesser-known pieces such as a first-person account by a 14-year old pilot who flew across the United States in a Piper Cub. Most have to do with surviving a dramatic test or ordeal of some kind. Roald Dahl flew against German bombers in the battle of Malta; William Rankin ejected from his jet and fell through a thunderstorm. Others, like William Lishman on hang gliding with birds, lean more toward the mystical or spiritual side of flying. Many libraries will already have some of the books from which these pieces were excerpted, but this collection does bring together shorter and less-taxing introductions to the authors. Recommended for public libraries where demand exists.

I am a student pilot working on my private pilot's license and have been wrestling with my own fears and anxiety while flying solo. A friend got me this book for Christmas, and the stories have been so riveting and inspirational - now I can't wait to go flying again! What sets this book apart is the quality of the writing and the storytelling - each of the authors/writers in this compilation is skilled not only in flying but with the written word! Excellent, I cannot recommend this book highly enough!!

This book is awesome if you want to get a taste of everything that great aviation writing has to offer. There are stories from almost every top-notch book in aviation and you'll probably do like I did and buy every book represented in Wild Blue. The stories are hand picked from selected novels and they will all have you glued to the book, this is one of those books that you just can't bring yourself to put down.
