Book Description

Broadcast Tie-Ins August 1, 2003
After 15 years on the air and a thousand stories on everything from the Ancient Astronaut Society to Zoe the Barbie Doll collector, the extremely popular public television series "Wild Chicago" now has its own companion guidebook. Curious natives and intrepid tourists seeking a slightly skewed take on the Windy City and its surrounding communities need look no further than this irreverent yet authoritative guide.

Host Will Clinger, producer Harvey Moshman, and correspondent Mindy Bell have collected their 500 favorite offbeat and unusual people and places that have been featured on the show. They know their viewers--people who will drive an hour to find that one artist who taxidermies the heads of turkeys and dresses them in doll clothes; who would rather see a sock puppet version of Titanic than a production of Macbeth at the Goodman; who love to explore and discover--and show off their knowledge to friends. They wrote this book for them and for countless others with a taste for the bizarre and unconventional.

This indispensable tool reveals seldom seen corners and little known wonders of Chicago, such as:
*American Pet Motel (more than just a place to board bowser)
*Lava Lamp Factory (cosmic illumination on the northwest side)
*Cut-rate Caskets (for sale to the public)
*Foot polo (without the horses)
*House of Whacks (latex & leather fashions)
*Those Darn Accordions! (must see to believe)
*Lee Watson's Reptile Swamp (need we say more?)
*Perry's Deli (when you're hungry for food--and abuse)

As they say on "Wild Chicago", "to navigate the urban jungle, you need a wild guide!"

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Wild Chicago" is a refreshingly chaotic look, a rapid-fire 30 minutes of active video that pokes into corners of the city relatively untouched by the bright lights of TV."
--Chicago Tribune

"If you like David Letterman's remotes, when he talks to strange people in the street and throws watermelons off a tower, you'll love Wild Chicago."
--Southtown Economist

From the Back Cover

After fifteen years on the air and a thousand stories on everything from the Ancient Astronaut Society to Zoe the Barbie Doll collector, the remarkably popular public television series Wild Chicago now has its own companion guidebook. Host Will Clinger, producer Harvey Moshman, and correspondent Mindy Bell have sifted through the show archives to offer up more than 300 of their favorite offbeat and unusual people and places the best of the best, the oddest of the odd. Explore seldom seen corners and little known wonders of the Windy City, such as:
Poultry Personalities pick up a taxidermied turkey dressed to impress
Cut-rate Caskets - buy one now before it's too late
House of Whacks - latex duds for the daring
Lee Watson's Reptile Swap - trade your creeper for a crawler
Perry's Deli - colossal sandwiches with a side of attitude
If you'd rather shop Maxwell Street than Michigan Avenue, if you'd rather see sock puppet theater than Macbeth at the Goodman, if your tastes run to the bizarre and unconventional, this is the book for you.

4.0 out of 5 stars Real alternative guide, December 20, 2005

This review is from: Wild Chicago: The Companion Guidebook to the Wildly Popular Television Show (Paperback)
Several guidebooks promote themselves as the "non-tourist guide" to Chicago or the "off-the-beaten path" guide, and so on. This book was created by people who have spent many years in Chicago and know what is unusual, worth the trip, or just so darned weird that you'll want to check it out. What will you get for your money? For starters, you'll learn where to purchase dolls made with turkey heads, or find out who makes Chicago's most famous hot dog (and how they do it), you'll be introduced to social clubs that meet for traditional dancing or (occasionally naked) bike rides, you'll meet a couple of local artists who you'd never find in a gallery or museum, and generally, you'll find out all kinds of things about Chicago that many of its residents have yet to discover (and the Visitors Bureau might wish that nobody ever did!).

4.0 out of 5 stars Wild Stuff Here, September 16, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Wild Chicago: The Companion Guidebook to the Wildly Popular Television Show (Paperback)
I really enjoyed the book and if you are coming to Chicago, definitely buy it. It's full of what are basically synopsis of the TV show's vignettes (each "Wild Chicago" show consists of 3-5 mini-shows). The book tries to give you the same off beat feeling of the TV show and while the book will certainly guide you to some wacky places around Chicago, trying to put the visual zaniness of the show into words is difficult at best. "Wild Chicago" also plays to the audience for a laugh and sometimes leaves reality in the dust. Case in point in the first section is a review of flying gliders ("Sky Soaring Gliders") which Wild Chicago seems to enjoy doting on the terror of it all (it isn't - I have done it) but describes going around in a non-FAA approved flying lawn chair ("A&M Air Sports") as "sheer exhilaration" (it IS terrifying). Oh well. So your best bet is to read between the lines, take things with a large grain of salt, and use the book to really enjoy WILD Chicago.
