Book Description

What do you get when you combine an imaginative little boy, a pernicious chocolate chip cookie, and a houseful of interactive objects? An entertaining CD-ROM adventure that helps kids read while keeping them entertained with a fun, original story.

The Wild Cookie is best-selling author Dave Johnson's first children's book. It is the tale a young boy spins to explain why his fingers are covered in chocolate.

Designed for ages 3 to 8, The Wild Cookie uses proven instructional methods with fun, colorful graphics, sound, and music to keep kids entertained while they learn to read and reinforce their existing learning skills. Since the story is about an independent-minded confection, every page hides a special cookie with its own unique personality. When discovered, the cookie amuses readers and then hides again, apparently prizing his privacy.

The CD-ROM has other unique elements. Among the product's many interactive elements is a stereo that plays over a dozen complete songs, ranging from classical to folk. We're proud to include a number of noted artists in the playlist; Wisconsin artist Ritt Deitz contributes two entertaining tunes, and many kid's parents may recognize Kristin Hersh, former leader of the Throwing Muses and creator of the smash 1995 solo album Hips and Makers. Kristin has donated two songs from her collection of childhood folksongs for The Wild Cookie. Nationally renowned violist David Becker contributes recent classical recordings as well.

Here's what you'll find in The Wild Cookie:

Read-to-me and interactive modes
Narrated by author
Kids hear words read aloud individually, or as part of the narrative
Entertaining repetitive narrative style reinforces key learning words
Over 400 interactive hotspots for lots of fun exploration
A thumbnail-image table of contents for quickly visiting specific pages
Pronunciation, context, image and printed word are all combined for cohesive learning
Professionally recorded music including brilliantly funny Wild Cookie Rap

System Requirements The Wild Cookie requires a 200MHz Pentium® or faster; Windows® 95/98/Me, NT® or 2000; 32MB RAM; 4x CD-ROM; sound card and speakers; video card capable of displaying 16-bit (high color) graphics. The Wild Cookie can be run directly from the CD-ROM; hard disk installation requires 140MB of free hard disk space.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome! I had as much fun as my kids!, October 30, 2000

The story is cute AND it kept my 5 year old's attention for a whole hour at a time! Her reading skills are visibly improved, even though she had to arm wrestle me for who got to play. My 3 year old loves the characters and the music. It's a great start for him on the computer.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent, My Kids Love It, October 17, 2000

We ran through the story at home and my kids love it. Basically, it's a hugely entertaining story about what happens to the last cookie in the cookie jar. I don't want to give away the ending, but it's a good one.

There's also a cute character (yeah, the Wild Cookie) that is hidden on every page of the story. I enjoyed the humor behind the surprises, and my 4 and 6 year olds keep bugging me to play it again. They had heaps of fun looking for the Wild Cookie.

I love this kind of offbeat humor and music that you don't usually find in kids' products.
