Book Description

January 3, 2012 A Pepper Martin Mystery (Book 5)

Her job has been cut, she's low on cash, and her detective sometime- boyfriend refuses to even talk about her ability to see the dead and solve their murders. So Pepper is most certainly down for a vacation to get her spirits up. But when her cute scientist friend Dan is kidnapped, Pepper soon stumbles upon another deadly mystery that brings her to New Mexico. And she's after a clever murderer-one whose idea of Boot Hill has nothing to do with Jimmy Choo.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pepper Strikes Again..., January 7, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wild Wild Death (A Pepper Martin Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
The Pepper Martin series has been my go to series for a long while now. When a new Pepper Martin book is released I am promised a fun mystery, at least a few good laughs, and a visit with a character who feels like an old friend. I can't remember what made me pick up the first book of the series "Don Of the Dead" but I am so grateful I did. I think anyone who loves a mystery with a paranormal aspect (Pepper can interact with ghosts) would really enjoy this series.

When we last left Pepper Martin, she had been sacked from her job at the Garden View cemetery. Then she receives a note that her old friend Dan has been kidnapped. She must steal the bones of a long deceased Indian named Chester Goodshot Gomez from his mausoleum at Garden View. This starts Pepper off on her newest adventure. I won't spoil any of the plot but I can assure you that it is one wild ride. I fell in love with Pepper's newest ghost, like I usually do. I really enjoyed the back story to this one as well. There wasn't anything about the story that I didn't like or that annoyed me. Sometimes I know who the villain is before we get to the end. I didn't in this one, but even when I do guess the bad guy it never hampers my enjoyment of these stories.

Unlike a lot of "cozy" mysteries, the Pepper series takes some chances. Pepper's life is not frozen in time. Her life evolves and she grows as a person. She dates and discards. Her heart breaks. Her employment status evolves. I would like to see Pepper get her Happily Ever After one day because she deserves it, but the journey there is a lot of fun.

If you haven't read this series do yourself a favor and pick it up starting with "Don of the Dead" so that you can see Pepper's progress. These aren't deep or dark books but that is what makes them so perfect. They are just plain fun and enjoyable!

5.0 out of 5 stars Pepper To The Rescue!, January 26, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wild Wild Death (A Pepper Martin Mystery) (Mass Market Paperback)
Unemployed Cemetery Tour guide, Pepper Martin is wondering about her future, when she receives word that her friend, Dan is coming to visit. Pepper's life is rather dull and her romance with Quinn is on hold until he can come to grips with the fact that Pepper can see and speak with ghosts.

Quinn takes Pepper to a Cleveland Indians game where they meet up with very dedicated fans of the team. The team loses but the fans suddenly recognize Pepper and want her to do something with the myth that a Taopi Indian, Chester Goodshot Gomez had cursed the town when he wasn't buried in New Mexico. Pepper thinks they are crazy.

Next thing, Pepper learns that Dan has been kidnapped and unless she brings Goodshot's bones back to be buried on the Pueblo, they will kill him. Pepper being big-hearted digs up Chester and they (yes, Chester is present,) go off to the rescue.

Nothing ever goes smoothly for our Pepper and she takes us on a fun but adventurous journey to rescue Dan and inter Chester's bones. Learning along the way about the Taopi traditions.

A good book and I loved the ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Truely Fun Read!!, January 10, 2012

I agree with one of the other reviewers that this is one of my go to series. I actually make a list of the different series of books I read and put them in my calendar so I don't miss the new one when it comes out.

I love the Pepper Martin series, it's totally a fun read. And I realllly liked this one in particular, especially Jessie, YUM!! Maybe we will see him in a future book, give Quinn something to think about.

Anyway, I think if you want to curl up and spend a few hours with some fun characters this is a great way to do it.

Always look forward to the next in the series, wish she could write faster!!
