From Booklist

This World War II story has many ups and downs. In Columbus, Georgia, Janelle Taylor, a young nurse with lofty ambitions and a knack for re-creating her upbringing, finds herself in the midst of a scandal. The scandal coincides with the military's removal of the ban on racial barriers. She opts to make a fresh start by enlisting in the army as a military nurse stationed in Tuskegee, Alabama. Taylor continually finds herself ecstatic over one event only to be shattered by another. Her relationships with the men in her life--brother, Perry; attorney, Dalton; and lover, Lance--provide an intricate weave of romance, anger, and disbelief. During the war, her relationships are forever changed: she loses her brother, finds the greatest love of her life, and manages to assist the NAACP in integrating the local segregated manufacturer. Not only is Wild Embers the charming place that Lance calls home, but it is also a story about the quicksilver nature of emotions, memories, and responses of a life evolving. Lillian Lewis --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars There Is Black Love!, November 6, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Wild Embers (Paperback)
This was an excellent book. I truly enjoyed this novel. Once again, Ms. Bunkley takes our history and brings it to life through a novel. It was a very pleasant read that made you think. It was nice reading a positive novel about African Americans. This book keeps your interest going and you won't put it down. I found myself reading the chapters in the grocery store lines and racing home so I could finish it. I've read three of her novel and all three were great.

4.0 out of 5 stars Characters Not Likeable, November 16, 2009
This review is from: Wild Embers (Paperback)
I relatively enjoyed the story. However, I disliked Janelle for most of the book. She redeemed herself somewhat towards the end of the book. I did not care for her brother, Perry either. They were both annoying.

Something did not make sense to me. If their father was such a big man, and he had been dead only over a year, why was their house in such bad condition and why did they live in such a dumpy neighborhood? This suggest to me that the situation was bad before he died prematurely. Also it was later found out that he had a kept woman. There is no sense to this. This is a hole in the story for me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Quick read, but not much more than that., June 16, 2006
This review is from: Wild Embers (Paperback)
I would say by the end, I did not feel a thing for any of the characters. By the end of the book, none of them seemed to grow that much. I typically enjoy books where I am so engrossed in the story, it's as if I'm in the room with the characters eavesdropping on conversations. Not so here. I was very detached from this book and found myself skimming pages. I felt the attraction to the lawyer, Dalton, was contrived. I initially picked up this book from the library due to the interracial aspects, but it happened so fast and without explanation. SAme goes for the relationship with Lance. We never saw/read them have any deep meaningful conversations until AFTER they had sex and hooked up. It just was all very blah. Janelle was not a heroine in my book.
