Book Description

April 1998
Wild Encounters, written with style, authority and humor, highlights the most spectacular wildlife watching and eco-touring opportunities in America. Lively and practical, this full-color guidebook reveals the best trips to take, when and where to go, and how to go it alone. Experienced travel writers Diane Bair and Pamela Wright (Adventure New England plus articles in New York Times, Backpacker, Better Homes & Gardens, McCall's) have crossed the country researching everything from the Snake River birds of prey to life at a remote grizzly bear camp in Alaska. They share the secrets of viewing animals in the wild - some endangered - and promote respectful wildlife watching. At once entertaining and inspiring, Wild Encounters is the perfect companion for anyone who loves the outdoors, and proves that great animal adventures are available to anyone.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

"When you engage in wildlife watching, something remarkable happens: You slow down to the natural rhythms of time and become aware of the cycles of nature. Weather and time take on special meaning in the wild. Wildlife watching takes patience, sensitivity and the ability to live in the moment, which may well be the reason it is so restorative and rewarding."

With this in mind, and with the hope of inspiring in their readers more passionate and deeper connections with the natural world, authors Diane Bair and Pamela Wright present up-close-and-personal tours of 25 animal-adventure trips in the U.S. From snorkeling with manatees on Florida's Crystal River, to watching a cloud of free-tail bats emerge from under a bridge in Austin, Texas, to witnessing battling wild stallions in Montana's Pryor Mountain Wild Horse Range, the authors bring you to the heart of the action. Accompanied by stunning, full-page and two-page photographs, personal essays ring with the thrill of first-hand experience.

The animal-watching adventures range in cost from free to expensive (Great Alaska Fish Camp & Safari's packages start at $2,495 for two days of experiencing the backcountry and viewing grizzlies). Each encounter includes a comprehensive sidebar with information on how to make the trip, what else to do in the area, and other places to experience each animal. --Kathryn True

3.0 out of 5 stars adequate, not wonderful, January 19, 2002

This review is from: Wild Encounters: The Best Animal-Watching Adventures in the U.S. (Paperback)
The book is brief descriptions of what you see during various animal encounters in the US, listed by area. There are a few that I was not aware of. On the other hand, they are brief, and only a limited amount of the necessary practical information is given for each. There are some nice photographs, though.
Be aware there is a lot of padding in the book--Two facing pages that are totally blank except where one says "Cranes Nesting in Nebraska" or something similar.
An okay book, but not wonderful.
