From the warm waters off Greece to the chilly fjords of Norway, the seas of Europe are portrayed in splendid style in this episode of the
Wild Europe series produced by PBS. The waters off Europe boast a wide diversity of sea life, and the viewer is taken beneath the ocean's surface to view such rare sights as sperm whales swimming near the Azores, and seals, dolphins, and octopi in the Mediterranean. Emerging from the deep, the camera also turns its attention landward to focus on seabirds, including guillemots, terns, and puffins, who make a habit of nesting on forbidding cliffs and rocks that rise from the sea. Just the locations visited, including Greece, Gibraltar, and the northern reaches of Scandinavia, would make a first-rate travelogue, thanks to their spectacular scenery, but what really makes this video remarkable is the adventurous cinematography. The camera succeeds in getting extremely close to the animals, and the viewer is brought virtually face to face with creatures that spend their time either hidden beneath the waves or perched atop utterly remote outposts. This is a sumptuous look at some of the world's most astonishing wildlife.
