1.0 out of 5 stars Problems with speaker cutting out and distorted, August 25, 2011
This review is from: Wild Game Innovations Flextone Mimic Electronic Game Call (Sports)
Well, I am returning this item but I wish it would have worked without problems. I gave it a low rating because it simply was defective. Specifically, the round speaker end of the unit is unscrewed to install 3 AA batteries. There are two metal, spring loaded pins in the hand grip section which touch a circular metal track on the speaker section. As one screws the speaker section back on, the metal tracks touch the two metal pins to complete the circuit to the speaker. Well that connection works poorly or not at all. The speaker cuts in and out. With higher volumes there is also serious distortion when the speaker does work.

A new item that does not work is enough of a reason to return it for a refund - which I did. However, please read on for details on the very simple modification I DID NOT DO that will likely fix the problem - as well as a general assessment of the sounds, menu and features. Truth be told, in some ways it is a very nice unit for the price - worthy of a four start rating in my opinion.

THE SIMPLE MODIFICATION - Out of curiosity I attached two alligator clips to the speaker terminals and the other ends to the spring loaded pins and the speaker worked flawlessly once the speaker terminals were securely connected to the amplifier. It seemed plenty loud enough to me with no distortion at any volume level. I COULD have modified it easily by just soldering speaker wires in place but I would have ended up with a brand new unit with a user modification and a voided warranty. No thanks! Still, it is mystifying why the designer would resort to such a questionable design when 12 inches of speaker wire would have worked flawlessly and lowered the production cost too!

CONS - The battery cover worked I suppose. It left a bit to be desired but it certainly was not a deal breaker. Also, the trigger that plays the sounds was poorly designed, moved only slightly when pulled, and offered no tactile feedback as to when it was off or on. However the trigger did work.

PROS - As far as the sounds, they were for the most part clear and the majority seemed to my ear to be genuine recordings of the animals rather than recordings of hand operated game calls. The lighted screen was nice and navigating through the sounds was easy enough. You cannot add or modify the sounds though. The wrist strap was useful and the whole unit had a non-reflective, thin rubbery coating.

Summing up - the price is certainly compelling and if it would have worked as advertised I could have enjoyed using it. While this game call has some merit (and is ten times cheaper than other products that seem to do the same identical thing) I think I will avoid this manufacturer. I would suggest that Wild Game Innovations fire the dim witted engineer who turned an otherwise acceptable product into a lemon with some laughable "Rube Goldberg" speaker connection instead of a short length of speaker wire!

1.0 out of 5 stars It's junk!!!, August 23, 2011
This review is from: Wild Game Innovations Flextone Mimic Electronic Game Call (Sports)
I purchased it during the off season with the intent to use during hunting season for predator hunting. When I first got it home it sounded good, then about two weeks later I tried it again and the sound was terrible. As long as the volume was turned down low it was okay. But if you turned it up it would distort so bad that you couldn't understand what was playing or no sound would come out at all. I couldn't find the receipt to return it to the store where I purchased it so I'm stuck with this piece of junk!!! NOT A HAPPY CAMPER....

OK 5 Stars, Not because its better then all other calls available, ITS NOT, But its $40 ! 5 Stars because for what it is it is very nice, Well Built and lives up to what i expected. Popped in 3 AA's and WHOOOOOT WHOOOOT, AWESOME ! Not the loudest call, Not Wireless, Not the Best Call in the World but worth ever Penny. Great Call Plenty Load to call in the animals its designed for ( except deer) the coon, yote, owl ..... all are great, water tight not water proof, definitely ok in a rain/snow event. Small, Very Small, Well Built and loud enough, Worth Every Penny !
