Book Description

October 1, 1991
  • Selected as one of the 75 Great Garden Books by the American Horticultural Society
  • Winner of the Garden Writers of America Art of Communication Award, 1991

In this modern classic of gardening, noted author and artist Peter Loewer explores native American plants for the wild garden, whether it's a green sanctuary in the midst of a concrete landscape or a natural area on the edge of virgin forest. The book includes reliable information on cultivating and propagating the best wildflowers and shrubs and offers curious folklore and historical footnotes on wild flora and fauna.

    Editorial Reviews

    From Library Journal

In this collection of 64 charming essays, well-known horticultural writer Loewer reflects on the flora and fauna encountered in his woodland gardens. Included in this melange for both the practicing and armchair gardener are stories on the origins of plant names, the life cycle of the fern, and the history of St. Fiacre, the patron saint of gardeners (and cabdrivers). Loewer sprinkles the text with poetry and references to many of the classics of garden literature. A bibliography of the many works cited would have been an extra bonus, but still, this is enjoyable reading, sure to be appreciated where works such as Roger Swain's Earthly Pleasures ( LJ 1/1/81) and Katherine S. White's classic Onward and Upward in the Garden ( LJ 7/79) have been popular.

This review is from: Wild Gardener (Hardcover)
I picked up this book in a moment of weakness (a winter walk in the woods). Simply magical. A beautiful blend of lore, humour, genus/species derivation, and poetry. I'm in the process of teaching nature to the kids now that they have HTML squared away. This they can read to me in the car. It's that good. Peter, give us more.
