4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, but definately not her best
I admit it was kinda hard to get through the beginning and parts of the middle, with all the battles going on and wondering why. I wish the character of Anne was brought more to life and included more in the story. And I never really understood why Margaret was so hateful towards everyone in the family? I love all Henley's books, she is a very talented writer. Raven...

3.0 out of 5 stars Not her best by a long shot!
I was quite dissapointed in this book and a little surprised. Ms. Henley is one of my fave's. While I do agree that this book was a little hard to get through, I wouldn't be as harsh as the previous review. I kept thinking that any minute it would get good but that minute never came. Definitely not what I have come to expect from Virginia, however, I have read several...

5.0 out of 5 stars Hot, hot read, August 8, 2010
Virginia Henley proves once again that she is the queen of erotic romance. I snap up every one of her books as soon as they are available. I have never been disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rich in history and sensuality--a great read!, May 26, 2011

This review is from: Wild Hearts (Kindle Edition)
Virginia Henley has done it again with this wonderful story of a Scottish orphan and the lusty rogue who wins her heart. As always, Ms. Henley paints a rich picture of the times and places in the book, skillfully weaving the history with the romance. I highly recommend Wild Hearts.

1.0 out of 5 stars VERY BORING!!! STUPID DIALOGUES, TOO!!!, July 1, 1998
By A Customer
Actually, I give this piece of crap no star at all but Amazon.com doesn't allow me that option. This is the worst book I've ever started to read. I can't stomach the dialogues. They are very dry and uninspired. The author writes the dialogues between the characters as if they were little children. The characters talked using simple sentences and the author didn't even bother injecting any flavor of the language during that period. The characters, males and females, are all silly and frivolous.

This is A TOTAL WASTE OF HARD-EARNED MONEY!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars i loved this book i couldn't put it down!, October 28, 1999

it was very interesting and i loved the way the author writes about how strong and take charge the men were! the reason why i like it so much is because it was the only thing that could come close to be as good as tempted! i wish that virginia would write more books like this! also try writing about some black charactors too!

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful!!, May 12, 2002
By A Customer
It amazes me that this book was even published. Henley will start to show promise by showing some flavor of the period, via descriptions of the town and castles and political tidbits. But then her characters will speak using today's language. And the cliches! There must be one on every page. She also jumps around too much. A single scene could be only a paragraph, then she's onto something else, switching point of views, etc. It's difficult to follow. Tabby is a flat, boring character. But Rogue I did like. He's a strong, dynamic character, even if his actions and motives aren't quite clear. I bought this book because the premise is promising. So much could have been done with this! But this reads like a rough first draft, a skeletal sketch of the story. Overall, VERY disappointing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Henley's Best, April 7, 2009
When I was in my early teens I read my first romance novel, "A Woman of Passion" by Virginia Henley. It was wonderful, and since then I've read a couple more of her books. This one is definitely the worst, and I'd actually give it 2 ¾ stars, but I'm used to rounding everything up. The story is decent enough but the writing isn't great. There is no real transition in-between characters and settings, so half the time I'm saying to myself "Hey, how did I get here!" I didn't like Paris half the time either. Someone needs to get him meds for his terrible mood swings, and I thought Tabby would be a little more humble since she lived all her life in an orphanage. She should have had a more difficult time transitioning herself from low to high class society to make her personality more appealing. I will continue to read Henley, but I won't recommend this one to my friends for the time being.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not one of Virginia Henley's better novels..., July 14, 2004
By
Kala (Ft Lauderdale, FL United States) - See all my reviews
I've been a fan of Virginia Henley for quite awhile now - The Pirate and the Pagan is one of my favorite 'historical' romance novels. I have read a good majority of her books and this one was probably one of her worst that I've read.

I just finished it this morning and I'm still a little perplexed. Tabby starts off as a rather bland and boring character. While she gets more interesting later on, her personality change is abrupt and jarring. She goes from timid and scared to outrageous and outspoken in a matter of a few pages - not very believable. Paris as the hero is much more interesting and pretty much stays the same the entire novel, much more believable to me.

The character of Anne, Paris' wife, is never fully explained. When I finished the book I just kind of sat there wondering why she was the way she was.

Also, Paris has 4 sisters and 2 brothers - and their flamboyance kind of reminded me of Mary Balough's Bedwyn family. They were pretty interesting, but I kind of would have preferred to find out more about Anne and more about Tabby's past (more about her mother and father) instead of so much about Paris' sisters and who they want to marry.

While the story was a little choppy and I didn't really like the heroine in the beginning, it did get better as the book went along and I got so in to it I couldn't put it down - as I tend to do with Virginia Henley's books. So it wasn't a total loss. :) I still would recommend some of her other books instead of this one, particularly the Pirate and the Pagan, Dream Lover and the Dragon and the Jewel.
