This is a nice, very G-rated family movie, particularly for those who enjoy a western setting and lots of horses. Loosely based on Mel Tillis' teen novel, "The Wild Horse Killers", it tells the story of Hank (a late teens Linda Blair, in one of her better roles), an college girl home for the summer at her father's ranch. When she sees wild mustangs being rounded up for the purpose of being killed and turned into dog food, she decides to singlehandedly herd the mustangs 150 miles away to a protected federal park.

The film changes the pivotal character of a friendly old prospector, who helps Hank achieve her goals, to a young and handsome cowboy, Charlie (Michael Wincott, unrecognizable as a baby-faced teenager) to add a note of romance to the story. In a nicely done feminist turn, Charlie admires Hank more than lusts for her, and follows her exploits with the goal of helping her achieve her goals and thereby win her respect. (It would be nice if a few adult films ever pursued such a thoughtful potential romantic subpot.)

There is plenty of nice scenery and Ms. Blair is an accomplished horsewoman, who looks extremely comfortable and natural in this part. I don't think anyone would call her a great actress, but this role fits her in a down-to-earth way that I don't think any of her other parts over the years have. The late Richard Crenna has a small role as her supportive dad.

This film is long out-of-print -- it's over 25 years old -- and I think that's a shame. There are not a lot of really good family films of the non-animated, non-slapstick comedy kind...and not a great deal of good horse/western type of films in the first place. I think this compares very favorably to "Return of the Black Stallion", with the added plus of a strong and competent female heroine.

If you get a chance to rent or view this with your family, go for it. I think it would be especially appreciated by horse-loving adolescent girls.

The previous person who reviewed this DVD was unlucky because I have of it and there aren't any problems. The DVD is official to start with, has a sharp widescreen print, no cuts and best of all a full length audio commentary with Linda Blair! She is fun and chatty and gives a lot of information throughout the film. For years the only way fans could get this movie officially was through the old VHS Vestron released, and that was very rare and expensive! I hope the other review doesn't stop people from purchasing this DVD because it is anything a fan could ask for and amazon will refund you if it doesn't work...

Linda Blair is fantasic in this movie for all animal lovers to see, It keeps you interested all the way through, A great family show and the music is great as well, Richard Crenna acts the father role that suits him to a tee. Horses must be taken over the border to Canada and its wonderful to watch. A wonderful classic movie.

This is a movie that not just the family, but the whole town can enjoy. A must see and own movie. I wish they msde more like thid one..

I loved this movie. I think that it's a show based on the courage and strength of one girl who never gave up on her beliefs. Shows the strength of one girl that was not giving up when others did. And, she conquers. It's a must see. The tear jerking, emotional rollercoaster is astonishing. Awesome show!

It's a must see movie for all horse lovers and those that feel the need to cry. About a young brave girl taking on all odds even her fathers to rescue wild horses and setting them free on federal land.

This movie was exactly the way I remembered it. My son that loves horses really liked this movie too. He didn't mind that it was a very old movie from the '70s. I'm really glad I can get these older movies for my kids to see. They are better than the violence and sexual movies they make today. The old movies like this one prove that you can make a good movie without all the violence and sex. I would recommend this movie to anyone with a love for horses.

I loved this movie as a young teen and it always stuck in my memory, I found myself singing the songs even as I got older. I've been keeping my eye out for it for many years and was so excited to see it came out on DVD... just had to get a copy. I still think it is a wonderful film and am proud to add it to my collection.
