5.0 out of 5 stars It will go unnoticed...Pity.
Aside electronica insiders, this surprisingly great album will go undetected by most as is the case with many albums of the same quality which get yero promotion by the music industry. A sad case really, but that's the way things work in the money-driven and fueled music market.

I said that this album is "surprisingly great" and this might in turn surprise...

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
Buy Ultra Sex and be you will be very happy. This album was a major disappointment for me. Don't get me wrong, I am still a Mount Sims fan! I'm just not sure what the agenda was for Wild Light. There isn't one track on the album that could justify my holding onto this CD. I had to sell it to a used Record shop. KEEP AWAY FANS OF ELECTRO! This album is NOT enjoyable...

Aside electronica insiders, this surprisingly great album will go undetected by most as is the case with many albums of the same quality which get yero promotion by the music industry. A sad case really, but that's the way things work in the money-driven and fueled music market.

I said that this album is "surprisingly great" and this might in turn surprise those who know Mount Sims. His debut album was not exactly a dismissable effort. But judging from that debut album, it was hard to expect a follow-up as engaging as this.

"Wild light" is brilliant for so many reasons:

it's melancholic and romantic without being superficial. It's diverse, and its multi-faciality will please those who like goth-electro or anything influenced by Depeche Mode or in general by 80s alternative electronic music. The lyrics are very decent and that is indeed a rare commodity nowadays. It's more compact than its predecessor in that it actually has a basic concept and it doesn't shift from here to there looking for direction. It's dynamic and yet ethereal. And it easily belongs in the essential releases for electronic music in 2005.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is not the expected electroclash trash., May 16, 2006
This review is from: Wild Light (Dig) (Audio CD)
I completely disliked Mount Sims until I gave this a listen after it being suggested by Solvent. This is not the electroclash trash I expected from Mount Sims after hearing his first tasteless and trashy album.

Way to go Mount Sims. You pulled off a serious, well done, artistic album. Keep it up.

Restless and Ashes are amazing.

With this release it is very clear that Mount Sims has moved in a completely different direction from his last full length CD. This is NOT poppy electro in the same vein as "how we do" or "black sunglasses", but instead it is dark moody music- it is definitely goth influenced at certain points of the album. At the same time this album is no less exciting than Ultra Sex. His sound has just EVOLVED into something different and it is in no way any worse at all. If you listen closely with an open mind you can hear bits and pieces of the style that he had on Ultra Sex. I almost like the new sound better especially on the track "no yellow lines." If you are looking for a happy, poppy electro CD then this is not the one for you. If you do want something that is quality with a definite goth influence then this is exactly what you are looking for.

I really enjoyed this CD, a bit darker than Ultra Sex, but wonderful! No Yellow Lines has a beat that kills! Gotta check it out, and Ultra Sex too if you haven't already! Can't wait to buy more Mount Sims!

5.0 out of 5 stars a truly amazing record, September 15, 2007
This review is from: Wild Light (Dig) (Audio CD)
I live in the East Village and the song No Yellow Lines really captures what I expected the place to be. Turns out the reality's a bit different but the song still captures that dream space. I heard that song first and was hesitant to try this record for months, since I didn't think it could live up to that song. Big mistake.

This is one the best records I've ever heard. To make a crummy comparison, it's like if Depeche Mode were much smarter and hadn't stopped experimenting in the early 80's. This is incredibly dark, obsessive and strangely catchy stuff you'll ever hear. I love to listen to this while I make art or make out intensely with someone I don't know that well or am prematurely obsessed with. Matt's nasaly delivery is such a big part of if, as is his seemingly primitive equipment--a lot of this feels like it was created on jerryrigged 80's casios. But Matt's using it to new effect--he's not some retro dude like the Faint. He's a real artist, finding new ways to capture the flavor of lust and obsession. I just realize I've used the word obsession or some variant three times in a few sentences. That's my obsession obsession, though, dig? One caveat: the instrumental stuff doesn't work as well since Matt's cool voice isn't there to carry you through it. But overall an amazing record that's quickly become one of my favorites.

4.0 out of 5 stars Deeper and Much Much Darker, August 25, 2005
This review is from: Wild Light (Dig) (Audio CD)
Matt was definately on a different ride when writing "Wild Light". This collection of uber goth confusion is both entertaining and thought provoking. "No Yellow Lines" has that early electo feel as Flock of Seagulls "Wishing" and just as fun to sing along to. The fantastic lyrics and ghostly vocals in "Ashes" moved me to the point I actually sat in the dark and cried. "Falling Up" is not to be missed either. Is it better than "UltraSex"? I don't know. Is better what he was looking for or was it difference? I love you Matt Where's the tour?

5.0 out of 5 stars Even better than Ultrasex, June 11, 2005
This review is from: Wild Light (Dig) (Audio CD)
This album was definitely different than Ultrasex, but in a better way, I think. As a whole the songs were slower, but deeper. "Ashes", "Restless" and the title track "Wild Light" are the standout tracks on this CD, but all the songs are good.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent new album from Matt Sims, February 12, 2006
This review is from: Wild Light (Dig) (Audio CD)
This album is genius. Not only does it provide a different aspect on the electro genre, it also shows an alternative side to Matt Sims, and represents how flexible and varied he can be. I don't think anyone can compare the two albums, simply because they're so different, and they're trying to achieve different objectives. Ultra Sex was a brilliant high-energy and sexual album, and now Matt Sims has introduced a contrast to that, providing a more relaxed and almost satirical style of music. I enjoy artists who are able to vary their style of music, and Mount Sims fails to disappoint.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bye Prince, we'll miss you!, March 3, 2005
This review is from: Wild Light (Dig) (Audio CD)
This album is Ultra Sex on tranquilizers. It's definitely darker, and the range of influences abound. If anything, he just dropped Prince off on the side of the road.

If Radiohead is goth, then MAYBE this cd could be considered goth. I think the first track (Forest Chamber) might scare Ultra Sex fans away. I'd hate to say this track sets the tone for the whole cd, because it doesn't.

"No Yellow Lines" and "Ergent no Ergent" are 100% Mount Sims with an added edge.

"Ashes" - OMG!!?! Depeche Mode resurrected with a female guest singer.

"Does she dance" - yummy, Ladytron anyone?

"Hollow Sky" - I'd bet this is a long-lost track from Aphex Twin's "Selected Ambient Works Vol. 2," on loan from my luverly Richard D. James, of course... Richard, call me!

"Somnambulist" - kind of a mix of Andre Estermann with a smidge of Wagon Christ for added flavor.

My personal favorites include "Restless," "Morning Birds Scream," "Ergent no Ergent" and "Falling Up."

If you are Mount Sims fan, give this one a whirl! It won't hurt, I promise!

If you are looking to discover great Electro albums, look into Ladytrons Light and Magic, Fischerspooners Odyssey, Felix da Housecat's Devin Dazzle and the Neon Fever, Adult's Resuscitation, Goldenboy's OR, Mount Sims' Ultra Sex, or even Goldfrapps sophomore release Black Cherry has a somewhat Electro feel.
