3.0 out of 5 stars Slow moving but sweet
Descriptions of characters and surroundings were lovely, but the book moves at a slow pace. I prefer more romantic tension among the hero/heroine and more adventure. Over 70% of the book was completed before there was even a kiss! Just not my style. A sweet read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Western Romances are Back!, May 13, 2011

I have missed good, solid settling the West romances--like the sort written in the '80s and '90s, and was so delighted to find this wonderful romance by Debra Holland.

Elizabeth is basically forced out of her brother's household when he marries a real witch of a woman, and so Elizabeth decides to move to Montana where her best friend lives with her husband and family. A handsome cowboy named Nick, who's been in love with Elizabeth's picture for years, is her traveling companion...but when Elizbeth gets to Montana, she has the surprise of her life when she meets a well-dressed man.

A wonderful story. If you loved Little House on the Prairie and the Wagons West series, as well as the early Linda Lael Miller and Susan Wiggs books, you'll enjoy Wild Montana Sky and, I'm sure, its sequel, Starry Montana Sky.

I thoroughly enjoyed Debra Holland's novel Wild Montana Sky. Ms. Holland's vivid details of settings and characters allowed me to conjure movie like images of Boston and Montana. As we watch the lead character Elizabeth transition both in location and life circumstances, we do see such changes in her heart, mind, and attitude. Ms. Holland's deep knowledge of the time period broadened my enjoyment of this book. The authentic settings, dress, decor, dilemmas, all added to the wholeness. I AM NOT usually a romantic novel type, but my love of Montana led this Boston girl to purchase the Ebook. I am so glad I did. looking forward to more!

Wild Montana Sky is an old fashioned, heart-felt historical romance. Elizabeth must make some tough choices throughout her journey. I find myself thinking of these characters long after finishing the book. Debra Holland makes you believe in second chances!

5.0 out of 5 stars Swept Away by Wild Montana Sky, July 6, 2011

Like so many people, I grew up on Laura Ingalls Wilder's Little House on the Prairie series, and I've been hungering for more ever since. There's something very special about that era, when every day was a struggle or an adventure. Debra Holland's Wild Montana Sky (The Montana Sky Series) brought it all back to me, and more, with a wonderful romance infused into the wild spacious Montana Big Sky country. I book I just can't forget. And don't forget to check out her sequel Starry Montana Sky (Montana Sky Series). I'm reading it now. The horses are special.

It's so nice to read a book that is fresh, well-written, and clean enough I can share it with my mom without embarrassment. The characters are vivid and three-dimensional, and I found myself falling just a little in love with Nick. I only wished the rest of the world could have left me alone for a few hours so I could have finished it in one sitting. Just might have to go back and read it again to see what I might have missed. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars A sweet, clean romance series!, July 9, 2011

Wild Montana Sky is a great historical romance! It is a CLEAN romance book which may be why some people feel it is for younger adults, but it can really be enjoyed by all ages. There was enough depth in the characters that graphic love scenes were not needed to keep my interest in the story. I read it rather quickly and promptly bought the 2nd book of the series, Starry Montana Sky. It is also a great read and can't wait for the 3rd book to become available.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Sweetest Read, June 20, 2011

Stunningly crafted, Golden Heart Winner Debra Holland captures the reader's imagination and heart in Wild Montana Sky. Set in 1893, the book features an imperfect heroine, Elizabeth Hamilton, who begins the story as a "refined" lady and slowly unfolds to realistically living in the "wilds" of Montana.

When Elizabeth's brother shows up married to a woman determined to tear apart Elizabeth's life, including "temporarily" removing her from her bedroom, Elizabeth leaves Boston society and seeks refuge with her best friend Pamela, who years before married and moved to Montana.

Although deemed a sweet Western, Holland expertly builds emotional tension and passion. Nick Sanders, the slightly younger hero, is divine. He's perfectly flawed with his closeted heart, tongue-tied nature and quick-to-anger personality. Yet, what he can't say via words, he infuses within heart-warming musical compositions.

Will Elizabeth choose the more properly suited prospect or take a chance on true love?

Unlike other novels based in a similar time period, Holland's tale features many of the hardships without unnecessary heartache. Also she fuels the reader's emotions - and honestly made me cry - it's not done simply for the sake of the craft. The storyline's organic to the plot. (And if that's evasive, I'd rather not give too much away.)

At 99 cents for the initial offering on Amazon, Wild Montana Sky, book 1 of The Montana Sky Series, is more than worth the buy.

Characters you will love (and a couple it's fun to hate), and a delightful satisfying romance set in late 19th century Montana. The contrast between Boston's cozy comfort and Montana's wild unrestricted ways adds depth and historical interest, one of the big reasons people enjoy historical romances. The author has a flowing narrative voice that provides period detail without yanking you out of the story. This is a beautiful read.

I used to inhale the Little House on the Prairie books when I was a kid, and later loved prairie set historicals (remember Julianne MacLean's Prairie Bride?). Debra Holland's WILD MONTANA SKY took me back there. I loved seeing the heroine, Elizabeth, adapt to the rough and ready life in Montana after her heretofore privileged life in Boston. Loved even more seeing her discover her own strengths. I've already got the next book in this series on my Kindle!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Historical with Heart, July 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Wild Montana Sky (The Montana Sky Series) (Kindle Edition)
I recently took a break from contemporary romances, mysteries and thrillers to read Wild Montana Sky and thoroughly enjoyed this departure from my usual reading preferences. Debra Holland does a wonderful job with this sweet historical and its story of a "proper" city lady of good family who leaves her familiar world behind to, hopefully, find a new place to live and new love out West in Montana. Through her characters' eyes and minds, we experience Montana's awesome beauty and all-too-possible dangers. We can feel how different this is for Elizabeth and watch as she grows into the person she wants to be, instead of the one her society upbringing dictated. Ms. Holland has a deft skill at weaving in description of everything from the clothing of the time period to the vast scenery. We can see, hear, smell and feel what it must have been like for the characters.

Although the story is "sweet" in that we don't see any lovemaking, the story is far from passionless. Attraction and yearning are all part of the relationships we see building throughout the book.

I'm looking forward to reading more in the Montana Sky series!
