A Goddess Encased in Leather,
By J. Barbee (Los Angeles, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Wild One: Classic Quatro (Audio CD)
Imagine my surprise when I discovered what was crouching behind the persona of "Happy Days' " Leather Tuscadero -- that the sweet, spunky, sterile version of Suzi Quatro that TV had created for middle America actually snarled like Elvis, and strutted like a pint-sized (and much tougher) Marc Bolan through songs that were sexy and sweaty enough to make you want to maul the nearest cute guy (or girl). Between the high-pitched wail at the beginning of "Can the Can," the sincere sing-along longing of "Cat Size," and the threatening promise in "Your Momma Won't Like Me" (although, really, how could she not?), her earlier material stands out in sharp relief to the rest of the simpy 70's AM pop that dominated the chart at the time, and drove Detroit's own Suzi right out to Europe where she could get the respect she deserved. Love her for the raspy delivery that she never believed to be "real" singing. Smile at the way that she ruled a bass guitar that was almost bigger than she was. Thank her for inspiring Joan Jett into a career in music. But most of all, idolize her for being totally herself, and more badass than you'll ever hope to be. If you think that you know everything there is to know about women in rock, and you don't own anything by Suzi Quatro, then, my friend, you don't know squat.

What was it about Suzi Quatro that made every pubescent boy in the mid 1970s weak at the knees? Long before Elle MacPherson and Flo-Jo stole the hearts of successive generations of teenage boys Suzi was the one who set the pulses of 14 and 15- year-olds racing. She was just as popular among young girls and people in their late teens and twenties as well. Supplied with excellent material from the Chinn/Chapman songwriting juggernaut (the Stock/Aitken/Waterman of the 1970s who also supplied material to Smokie, Mud, The Sweet and The New World among others) it is surprising that this very American lass had to secure a recording contract with a British label because the American labels considered her too raunchy for American tastes. She finally landed an acting role on the classic family sitcom Happy Days where she portrayed a girl from the wrong side of the tracks who was always in her sister's shadow. She managed to sing Devilgate Drive on the show, albeit in an amended form. Anybody who listened to radio in Australia, Europe and Japan during the 1970s couldn't have missed her songs and she still makes the occasional cabaret tour of Australia. Incredibly she has a daughter who is now almost 30! Although Suzi had few hits in the US this excellent compilation is now available Stateside as a local release. It even contains the incredibly rare 1975 single Michael (not released on any LP), but once again we are denied the slow version of The Wild One which appeared as the B side of the more familiar rock version in Australia (probably due to a tape mix-up). It has never been reissued. Suzi broke from EMI's RAK Records in 1979 and signed up with an independent label the following year releasing Rock Hard, a song which was a minor hit and which has also never been reissued. Maybe Rhino can do a compilation CD where all the classic and rare tracks are finally brought together. In the meantime this CD will do just fine.

its classic Quatro,

It's very unfortunate that Suzi Quatro's style of Rock n Roll music never had a big impression on the United States as this is where it all started for Women in Rock.Ok there was janis joplin and a few others but Suzi rely blasted open the door of Rock n Roll for Women and put them on the rock n roll map if you will.. This is a great compliation of all those fantastic hits that made Suzi Quatro a house hold name in Europe Australia and Japan.. Suzi rely Rocked the joint, and is still touring to this day. This compliation tells a very good story of a lady that was meant to be around for a long time.. Without Elvis Presley there may not of been Suzi Quatro but without Suzi Quatro not just kicking in but blasting open the door for women who wanted to rock, that door perhaps may still may be closed even today...

There's Something About Suzi,
This review is from: The Wild One: Classic Quatro (Audio CD)
What is it about Detroit?Iggy Pop, Ted Nugent, Bob Seger, Grand Funk Railroad, and Suzi Quatro are just some of the big names to come from that city. Every one of those acts has gone on to achieve some measure of nearly legendary stardom. Iggy Pop is widely credited as the father of Punk and glam (David Bowie and nearly every British Punk act paid tribute to Iggy & the Stooges); Grand Funk and Bob Seeger had legions of fans who just loved great rock & roll; Ted Nugent is an icon in heavy metal (and now with America's new anti-terrorism war, his fan base is surging again), And then there's Suzi Quatro. Probably the most overlooked femal rocker of the 1970's and early 1980's. Never as provocative as "The Runaways" and eclipsed by disco queens like Madonna or the soul music stars of the MTV era, she got no respect. What a sad commentary on the supposed feminism in the mnusic industry that real talent was overlooked while shlocky chicks with little talent were hyped to mega stardom. Well those ladies are gone, and after looking among the ruins of past music eras, Suzi Quatro's "hits" CD is like a buried jewel. I think that this is the sound that BLONDIE and some other bands with strong female leads always wanted to get, but never could. Unlike Blondie, the Suzi Quatro CD seems to have aged well. It is glam rock, with all the campiness, glitter, leather, and excess that genre contained, and even though some critics hate this stuff, like a Jeepster, it's too much fun for anyone to care what a critic thinks. There's not a bad song here. If you liked Drew Barrymore's character in "Charlie's Angel's" (the movie), you'll love this CD--because Suzi-Q is not just acting. Fans of Joan Jett and the Runaways will probably already have this and other Suzi Quatro CD's. The vocals are tough and gritty, but never dykeish and nasty. Musically, the guitar playing is strong and the songs have lots of good hooks. If Joan Jett is the female Mick Jagger, Suzi Quatro is the female Marc Bolan. One big surprise here is "Stumbling In", which sounds more pop than rock, but it's hard to figure out why this was not a huge hit. Other catchy songs: "Can The Can", "Your Momma Won't Like Me", "The Wild One", "Mama's Boy", and "Cat Size".

Defined 80s before 1981!,

This review is from: The Wild One: Classic Quatro (Audio CD)
Suzi defined the slick hard-pumping style so popular in the '80s, and she did it as a punk in the '70s. Her biggest successes were in Europe, which is odd considering she was from Michigan I think. This stateside version of Wild One has the same number of songs as the Japanese version I have, but the Japanese one has "Roxy Roller", which has a great sliding sound.

Too Good!?,

I have searched for a great Suzi Quatro collection, and this is it! There are all the most important hits between the years 1972 and 1979. I really love her voice. I think she is the rock queen together with Joan Jett who is also a great singer! Suzi Quatro didn't only affect by creating girl hard rock but also had a great influence on The Runaways which is the great female rock band ever! I have to say that without Suzi Quatro there wouldn't have been bands like The Runaways and Girlschool. She is the godmother of fem-rock! This collection includes 20 great hard rock songs, just like "Can the Can", "48 Crash", "Daytona Demon", "The Wild One", "If You Can't Give Me Love", and many more. I really love Suzi's singing voice. What more can I say? She's the rock lady.
Stars: If You Can't Give Me Love, Daytona Demon, Can the Can, I May Be Too Young, 48 Crash Tracks: 1. Can the Can 2. 48 Crash 3. Daytona Demon 4. Devil Gate Drive 5. Too Big 6. The Wild One 7. Your Mama Won't Like Me 8. I Bit Off More Than I Could Chew 9. I May Be Too Young 10. Tear Me Apart 11. Roxy Roller 12. If You Can't Give Me Love 13. The Race Is On 14. She's in Love with You 15. A rare and heart-felt collection in trbute Suzi,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Wild One: Classic Quatro (Audio CD)
Quite frankly, folks, this is a testimony of how original Joan Jett, Lita Ford and Fiona Apple are NOT!!! Suzi began the movement of the "Grrrl" rock artists. This collection features the heart of Suzi, i.e.; "Stumblin' In", and a rare version at that. Also the sounds of Leather Tuscadero and of course the songs that made her what she is to me and the very limited, but dedicated fans, the original rock and roll sex Goddess. Please!! Don't let the image fool you. Suzi, at 5'2 and 92 lbs soaking wet, is as sweet and pure as Leather Tuscadero might've been if Joannie Cunnigham didn't need a role model of her genre. ENJOY!!!

Glam, bam, quality rock and roll from Suzi Quatro,
By
This review is from: Wild One: Greatest Hits (Audio CD)
Suzi Quatro was a great introduction to rock and roll when in my early teens in the 70 th`s here intense female light screaming vocal exploded in my ears . That`s fore sure. There`s no playlist listed here from this Import, but i have the first print from 1990, and Stumblin in is not included among these 20 greatest hits, but maybe EMI has included it in the 2005 print. But there are more enough goodie, goodies on the CD. It smashes directly into here megahit
Can the Can, a masterpiece from the songwriters Chinn/Chapman. Suzi "a rock and roll" scream queen, which plays bassguitar, with a heartbeat driven rythmic punch on the bass which realy set`s the standard. Track 2 48 Crash also delivers with much of the same quality as the previous one. Suzi voice has a raw scream quality, that fits perfect to this early 70 ths hit. Track 3 Daytona Demon, has a weird breathing on the vocal in the beginning, but doesn`t holds the same standard. Too much, too messy. In other words, "not to demonic" to give me a good creepy feeling. Track 4 Devil gate drive. We are back in the simpel good rock and roll feeling. This one knows it roots, and its very well performed in every department. Track 5 Too Big, is a minor let down. It has the drive, thats for sure, but the little extra is missing. Great pianoplaying in the background, though. Track 6 The Wild One, is not wild enough, and has nothing to do with other great songs with the same title. This is an orginal Chinn/ Chapmann production. Track 7 You mamma won`t like me. Just ok this one, funky it is anyway, Sometimes good, sometimes not. Track 8 I bit off more than i could chew. It`s Suzi doin "psychidelia" rock and roll for a change. Not for everybody taste. Track 9 I may be to young is a "honky tonky " rock and roller which swings ok. Track 10 Tear me apart, is a quality rock and roller, with good singin and a melody to follow. Track 11 Roxy Roller, has ecco, good bassdrive, but a melody which are easily forgotten. Track 12 If you can`t give me love is a Chinn/ Chapman classic which realy delivers. It has drive, guts, and glory, and has much of the soundpicture as Stumblin in with the classic Smokie sound , where Chris Norman came from who sang duet with Suzi on Stumblin In. Track 13 The Race is on is something else for a change. It begin`s as a ballad, but suddenly changes in to a weird rythmic pop song, which is far from rock and roll. Track 14 She`s in love with you, is a song which has a refrain which goes on and on and on, and that`s it. Track 15 Mamas Boy, has much of the same problem. Track 16 I`ve never been in love is a good standard rocker with has heart and soul from the roots back from the 50 ths. Track 17 Rolling Stone, was here first singel from 1972, and has a ecco from flower power music, but sorry to say not to good. Track 18 All shock up, is an interesting take on the Presley classic, and it swing`s very well all trough. Track 19 Keep a knockin, is a classical rock and roller, where Suzi gives us an orginal interpretation off. Track 20 Wake up a little suzi. A classic which The Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson has done better with. Anyway, this is glam, bam, quality rock and roll from Suzi Quatro, and a good introduction to the quality rock and roll "scream queen" from the 70 ths. If Stumblin in is included on this 2005 print, you are in for an extra gem, lucky you.

I had this album many years ago but it had gotten stolen so I am very happy with this item. I had been looking for it for years everywhere and on a whim I tried to find it on Amazon. It is a good album by an artist I got interested in by watching VH1 classic and the original VH1. So to sum it up I really liked this album and am very pleased with the one I purchased through this site.
