4.0 out of 5 stars Real Classics
This Album has some real deep classic tracks, back when hip-hop was still trying to say something. Some of these songs were on my personal mix tapes that were recorded from the radio around '88 and had no clue of who they were, I bought the album for Main Source, it turns out I got a butt load of bonus tracks. I gave four stars for the variety.

3.0 out of 5 stars Old School, Underground, Classic
All in all, it's a mediocre disk, but it's got a few classics on it, that make it worth the few bucks. I mean, where else can you find Live At The Barbeque (Nas's first track) on CD? Huh? And tell me you don't remember when Lookin' At The Front Door use to be the joint (Woo-woo, woo-woo-woo, woo-wooooooo)! Who remembers Hush-Hush tip? N-Tyce? Pre-Venom days? And,...

5.0 out of 5 stars Doesn't get better than this. Really., May 11, 2001

There's not a dud on this comp. You'll be amazed and entertained from start to finish. Anything less than 5 stars is underrrating this masterpiece collection of classic underground hip hop. I can't wait for the second volume.

I don't know why I waited so long to get this raw collection of old school joints but it was such a breathe of fresh air to hear "Manifest" by Gangstarr the way I remember. Latee's tracks are bangers and the rest round out why you should cop this too. Mad recommended!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars classics, April 5, 2001

I'm not that down. But I can recognize classic hip hop and all these songs are and I'm enjoying it alot. "Looking at the front door" is a little played for me but it's still good. All these other songs are just aghh i don't know. This is the rap that an average rap fan doesn't hear alot of, but really wants to. I promise you. "Live at the BBQ" is great, Nas's debut on a record, and he rips it up. I think he was only 17 or so when he wrote those lyrics and not much older when it was done. "Court is now in session" is also, Biggie got his beat for "Friend of Mine" from this and oh these are classic songs. get it. There is Kool Keith before he was really annoying like he is now. You'll enjoy it i promise.

It may not be "real" or whatever to get a compilation like this but so what. great songs all on one CD... SOmething for everyone. it doesn't get 5 stars because that'd be weird to give a compilation 5 stars, but almost all these songs are definitely 5 stars and all the rest are 4.. get it get it get it

And, yup, that was Method Man on the hook. Even the corny tracks like Blue Cheese, have a bit of nostalgia to them. I gave it 3 stars, because most of the songs are forgettable, but it does have those few jewels that make it a worthwile addition to your collection. Hell, if one of my boys in college hadn't got me for mine, I'd be listening to it right now!
