Book Description

April 1, 2011
When David Sobel’s children were toddlers, he set out to integrate a wide range of nature experiences into their family life, play, and storytelling. Blending his passion as a parent with his professional expertise, he created adventures tailored to their developmental stages: cultivating empathy with animals in early childhood, exploring the woods in middle childhood, and devising rites of passage in adolescence. This book is Sobel’s vivid and moving memoir of their journey and an inspiring guide for other parents who seek to help their children bond with the natural world. As we share this family's experiences, we observe how wild play in nature hones a sense of wonder, provides healthy challenges, and nurtures Earth stewardship—and we share Sobel’s joy as his children, Eli and Tara, grow into earthbound, grounded young adults.

Richard Louv’s Last Child in the Woods identified the urgent problem of “nature deficit” in today’s children, sounding the alarm for parents, educators, and policy makers. Wild Play is a hopeful response, offering families myriad ways to blaze their own trails; it should become another classic in this field.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Joy is in the Journey May 10, 2011
Format:Paperback
I found this book to be a beautiful portrayal of an integrated approach to mindful and passionate parenting and so much more!
The author's deep love and appreciation of nature and his commitment to making nature experiences an integral part of his parenting is inspirational. By sharing very specific and extremely touching stories of a myriad of adventures with his two children as they grew into adulthood, he gives us a glimpse of the limitless opportunities for connecting with the hearts, minds and souls of our children while also attending to developmental needs. And it can all be done with lots of joy, an open heart, and a willingness to feel completely the inevitable bittersweet pains and challenges of the parenting journey.
I was also moved by the obvious gratitude, awe and sense of wonder the author brings to his days.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Inspiring Memoir on Parenting August 15, 2011
By MM
Format:Paperback
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book - in particular, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy reading someone else's stories about his own parenting adventures with his kids. I was wrong. David Sobel's latest book is deeply personal, full of compelling narratives, and a great inspiration to me as a parent and teacher. And he manages to do this with a humility that is somehow also confident and passionate. One thing that really stands out for me is the great personal joy Sobel clearly took in the time he spent with his children and the many ways he found to honour them through various stages of their growth and development (the book is divided into early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence). I didn't take the book as pro- or pre-scriptive - I don't think I could pull off some of the things he was able to, but I finished inspired to find my own ways to connect with both children and the natural world in ways that work for my family.

This is probably the most influential and certainly the most enjoyable book I've read on parenting. I hope I am able to cultivate in my children the love of the wild that permeates Sobel's stories, and even more so, I hope I am able to create the loving, respectful bond he so intentionally nurtured (and continues to nurture) with his children. Loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The power of story July 25, 2011
Format:Paperback
The power of nature in children's lives is inextricably linked to the power of story, and David Sobel, one of the pioneering voices in the children and nature movement, is a born story teller. 'Wild at Play' is an invaluable, eloquent and heartfelt contribution to the future growth of the movement, and most of all to children and those who love them.
