Helix at their best!!!,
By
This review is from: Wild in the Streets (Audio CD)
This is the pinnacle of Helix's power. The album smokes from beginning to end! Even the ballad, Dream on rocks. I think what makes this record stand apart from their earlier gems is the production values. Mike Stone really did a good job here. Brian Vollmar sounds as ferocious as ever and songs sound clearer and crisper. Highlights include title track, Wild in the streets, shot full of love, High voltage kicks, She's too tough(covered by Def Leppard later), Kiss it goodbye(your ass) and my personal fav, love hungry eyes! 1987 was a good year for me overall and this record certainly helped. Buy this if you like good, solid in your face 80's metal. Also, these guys were talented musicians who could really play. I kinda lost track of them after this and Paul Hackman's death. Get it and you'll like it!!Cheers....

Helix - 'Wild In The Streets' (EMI) 4 1/2 stars,

Originally released in 1987,as 'Wild...' was Helix's seventh record. One of the few Canadian bands I'd fully support anymore.I know, for a fact they still exist.Just all around good old school heavy rock(call it metal if you like). Most impressive tracks are the title cut "Wild In The Streets",their anthem(?)"Never Gonna Stop The Rock",their Nazareth cover, ballad "Dream On","Give 'Em Hell","High Voltage Kicks" and "Love Hungry Eyes".Would likely appeal to fans of AC/DC,The Cult,Kick Axe,Killer Dwarfs and Twisted Sister.Recommended.

I remember listening to this on casette back in 1987 and having to end up buying it on cd as I basically destroyed the casette by listening to it too much. The opening track of WILD IN THE STREETS to the end track of KISS IT GOODBYE are great tracks. A song off of the album WHAT YA BRINGIN' TO THE PARTY is such a great track. SHE'S TO TOUGH IS A GREAT SONG which I honestly prefer over the DEF LEPPARD version. I thing that DREAM ON is a great ballad track for the album. This cd is all in all a great ROCK/HEAVY METAL album. A fan of HELIX must possess this cd.

A Lot Better Than I Expected,
By Fred Rayworth (Las Vegas, NV United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Wild in the Streets (Audio CD)
We bought Wild In The Streets when my wife was a DJ at Incirlik AB in Turkey. It was the 80's and we picked up as many metal albums as we could. I haven't listened to it in 20+ years, so when I burned it to CD and played it on the way to work, I was a little surprised.
This album screams hair metal cliché. As soon as the first song started, I heard that "mandatory" hair metal snare drum sound. A look at the song titles added to that first impression, and then of course, there is the obligatory lighter in the air ballad, which in this case, is the third song Dream On. However, after just the first side, I realized that despite the obvious clichés, I could actually remember some of the songs. Not only that, but they varied the tempos and feel of each song to give them a less bland sound compared to most of their hair metal peers. The photo of the band didn't help, with their "poufy" hair, but I'm sure their record company made them look that way to try and cash in on the times. After just one listen, I realized these guys were not all that typical. There is something appealing about them that sets Helix a cut above the average hair metal band. Though they stick to some of the standard clichés of this genre, they have a distinct sound that is quite cool. Overall, I can say I'm not disappointed in this album. After not hearing it for 20+ years, I now have to wonder why I didn't listen to it more often. If you are into hair metal, you can't go wrong with these guys. They are a notch above the crowd. Highly recommended.

best Helix,

This and "No Rest" were as great as Helix got. Great vocals, and you actually notice a great drummer...the crash cymbal, wow! Title track, "Bringin' to the Party", "High Voltage", are all true party anthems about being young, having fun, taking chances. Problem is Helix stopped taking chances after this, and began sounding like everybody else with garbage like "Another Taste"; then one guy died, another retired, the rest quit and Helix crashed and burned out. Pitty they could not keep going. Would like to see this reissued with some unreleased demo's or live tracks.

Although it doesn't say it on amazon.com, this CD is remastered.Sound is much better than the original Capital 1987 release. This version is from EMI Canada, released and remastered in 2002. So if your looking to upgrade your old version of WITS this is one. One of my favorite Helix CD's. Great songs, no filler! Excellent hard rock/metal from the 80's.

Helix was one of those 80's hair metal bands that always flirted with stardom here in the US, but were never able to break out. I'm not sure why fame eluded them, they had the talent, just give Brian Vollmer's vocals a listen. Helix had a kind of cool AC/DC meets Quiet Riot sound, and "Wild in the Streets" is a good showcase of what the band had to offer. The titular song is a great ode to hot summer nights spent listening to your favorite tunes. "Never Gonna Stop the Rock" is your typical hair metal rock anthem, which by law was required on every album put out between 1983 and 1990. Of course you are going to get your power ballad in "Love Hungry Eyes" (again...it was law that every hair metal band include 1 power ballad), but it's a good song. If you are a fan of hair metal, Helix is a great band to discover. This was their 6th album, so there is plenty of "new" hair metal to unearth by these guys, and Helix, and other "forgotten" 80's metal bands are a nice alternative to the current music scene.

This Was a Great Movie,
By Bob Morton "Old Rock & Roller" (Huber Heights, OH USA) - See all my reviews

I'm showing my age here, but I LOVED this movie. I can't remember whether it was in the late 60's or early 70's, but I PAID to see it probably at least 6 times (We didn't have VCR's or DVD's then). If I recall, the lead character was Christopher Jones, who played Max Frost. It was typical of a lot of movies of the time; Teenagers taking over the town (world?).
The plot might have been somewhat lame, but the Soundtrack ROCKED. I still have the original LP, which is pretty scratchy.(For you youngsters, an LP was a vinyl disc that fit on a turntable and rotated at 33 1/3 rpm, lol, just messing with the younger crowd). Definitely not the CD/DVD sound quality we have today, but back then it was the best we had. |
