Editorial Reviews

Brandon Boyd is the lead singer of pop/rock band Incubus. Following their last album 'Light Grenades', the band each took a brief period of time to explore their own interests. A prolific artist, Brandon began plucking away on an acoustic guitar and it organically evolved into this 10 track album. The album comes on the heels of 2 poetry books that Brandon has released in recent years. Most of the instruments were played by Brandon himself. The artwork & bio were done by Brandon that explains his personal journey in making this record.

You can tell Boyd's mind is filled with healthy curiosity about humanity here. He maintains a certain raw acoustic quality with each song which emphasizes the urgency of his message(s). Fans of early 90s Alice in Chains and STP will identify with the sound of many of these songs. Boyd delivers amazing vocals, as usual. Overall, this is a great record which gets better and more meaningful with each listen.

Love Incubus, and Brandon Boyd is a big reason why. The songs here diverge from what you might expect to find on an Incubus album, but that is to be expected from a solo project. It is a solid collection, but I would not say there was anything standout about this album. However, if you are a fan of Brandon Boyd and Incubus the album is worth picking up. I might have given it 4 stars, but I lowered it to 3 because sound quality on many of the tracks is just bad. Especially the bass notes. They tend to drown out the rest of the music and lyrics at times. Not sure if this was intentional to give the album a "raw" feel, but it did not work for me.

I don't know what Brandon was thinking here. The drums do not sound 'raw' or natural' they just sound bad, distorted, and some other frequencies as well. It's really too bad, these songs are overall better than the ones on the new Incubus album but the production just makes it almost impossible to sit through a listening. Actually hurts my ears.

I bought this album because I have been an Incubus fan for about 12 years. It took me a while to actually get it after its release date, as I usually wait for albums to get under $10 before purchasing on Amazon. :) Anyway, I bought it, ripped it to FLAC and finally sat down to listen. FOR THE REST OF THIS REVIEW I AM GOING TO TYPE IN CAPS SO YOUR EYES START TO HURT - THAT WAY IF YOU ARE LISTENING TO THE ALBUM TWO OF YOUR FIVE SENSES WILL BE OVERLOADED. I RAN THIS ALBUM THROUGH REPLAYGAIN AND WAS APPALLED TO SEE HOW LOUD THIS ALBUM WAS....ESPECIALLY SINCE THE SMALL CLIPS I PREVIEWED DID NOT SOUND LOUD - THEY SOUNDED ALMOST ACOUSTIC-Y. THE DISORTION ON THIS ALBUM IS SECOND TO NONE - IT'S A THIRTY FIVE MINUTE ALBUM AND I'VE GOTTEN A SMALL HEADACHE AFTER LISTENING FOR AROUND 10 MINUTES. IT'S AMAZING TO ME ANYONE WOULD EVER RELEASE AN ALBUM THAT HAS THIS POOR OF SOUND QUALITY. THE MUSIC DOESN'T SOUND BAD AT ALL, BUT THIS IS THE WORST MASTERED/PRODUCED ALBUM I HAVE EVER HEARD - WORSE THAN CALIFORNICATION BY RHCP, WORSE THAN DEATH MAGNETIC BY METALLICA. YOU CAN'T GET PAST THE WALL OF DISTORTION AND EVEN ATTEMPT TO ENJOY THE ALBUM! I WOULD HAVE OPTED FOR A RETURN, BUT I BOUGHT IT A FEW MONTHS AGO AND AM OUTSIDE THE RETURN POLICY WINDOW.

FOR FANS OF MR. BRANDON BOYD - PLEASE UNDERSTAND I BOUGHT THIS ALBUM BECAUSE I AM FAN OF HIS AND OF INCUBUS. I'M NOT TRYING TO BASH AN ARTIST I LIKE, BUT THE LOUDNESS WAR HAS TO STOP. TAKE A LOOK AT THE FOLLOWING THREAD I FOUND ONCE I GOOGLED THE ALBUM TO SEE IF OTHERS THOUGHT THE SAME AS ME:

[...]

IF YOU BUY THIS ALBUM, DO NOT TURN THE VOLUME UP AT ALL, OR YOU WILL RUIN YOUR SPEAKERS. AGAIN, IF YOU THINK I AM EXAGERRATING, PLEASE READ THE THREAD I POSTED ABOVE. MR. BOYD, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED. RE-ISSUE THE ALBUM IN A LISTENABLE FORMAT. END THE LOUDNESS WAR!!!!

While anxiously waiting for the Incubus release coming soon, I saw that Brandon Boyd released a solo album. I was so pleased to hear that his voice is as strong as ever and with the creative musical support behind him, I wouldn't be surprised if he decides to pursue a solo career someday. For anyone who loves Incubus and the talent this singer possesses, I highly recommend it. The only reason I didn't give the CD 5 stars, is I was expecting perfection. There were a few questionable mixes and one of the songs is a bit over produced. Other than that, the CD is worth acquiring.

I've been a fan of Incubus for years, and I'm happy to say that this album has reached a new level for Boyd. Every song is good, my favorites are tracks, 'Dance While the Devil Sleeps,' "Spectral Tiger," and 'Mirror of Venus.' But I think the biggest reason I like this album are Boyd's lyrics. What I see in the lyrics are Boyd's inner journey, and vocalizing of his meditations. Some of my favorite lines, are stuck in the belly of fate (see Tibetan Wheel of Fate) or "a spectral tiger born, with beautiful stripes and porcelain teeth," (spectral tiger is a Asian and Mayan myth). There are many other references to myth and the metaphysical. Truly inspiring album.

The music on the album is 5/5

The way it was recorded sounds distorted and pretty bad. I know BB was trying to get that raw, dirty, organic sound, but it really washed out the music in a shitty way.

The CD should be remastered and re released.

I hope BB learned his lesson and his next record will sound cleaner.

Overall, I enjoy this album.

As a friend of the Boyds, I find Wild Trapeze to be a new way of Brandon expressing himself. I like the gritty sound comparsion to an old Alice and Chains albums but still with a tribal drum beat to keep the music interesting. It may not have the Incubus feel but that's why its a Wild Trapeze :) I liked it!
