I almost wrote off UK trio Noisettes. With a name like that, I thought they would do cheesy Girls Aloud/Pussycat Dolls-style anonymous Pop. Thanks to loads of rave reviews by critics, I decided to give the album a try and I'm glad I did. Imagine if Amy Winehouse or especially Eartha Kitt fronted Blondie or Garbage and you get the picture. Lead singer (and bassist) Shingai Shoniwa's Jazzy purr and inflections make for an interesting contrast to the various styles on display, and raise them above other female led Rock bands. That alone would be enough, but the songs are maddeningly catchy!

Opening is the Jazzy acoustic breezy ballad "Sometimes" with rising choir-like harmonies (it reminds me of Corinne Bailey Rae), followed by the funky heavily Disco tinged #2 UK hit single "Don't upset the rhythm" which will get your feet moving while singing along to the "Go baby go baby go" refrain. Title track "Wild young hearts" is bouncy Jazz-inflected Pop/Rock with hand claps, similar to Amy Winehouse and Mark Ronson's cover of "Valerie". "24 hours" is shimmery retro Pop, while "Every now and then" is a gentle ballad with swelling cinematic strings finding Shoniwa (of Zimbabwean descent) sounding so moving against a dreamy backdrop of harmonies.

"Beat of my heart" is catchy Pop/Punk Rock with pulsing synths and guitars that sound like they are on helium, a tale about a guy she fancies. The tender acoustic introspective ballad "Atticus" fittingly name drops the book it's name is taken from, "To kill a mockingbird". Truly beautiful. "Never forget you" sounds like something by a sixties girl group. The incredibly catchy "So complicated" is sunny Supremes-style Pop, while "Saturday night" throbs with shimmery synths. Closing is the ballad "Cheap tricks" which shifts from a delicate piano intro to a raging crescendo.

It's impressive how they run the gamut of so many styles in the course of just 11 tracks. Simply dazzling! Their album has hit #7 in their native UK. Here's hoping they are around for very long cranking out such great music.

Great album. I stumbled onto this artist by watching some music video's on CoolTV. Her voice and ambiance captured my attention! Great music sung with great passion! Love her!

The US release of "Wild Young Hearts" omits the track "So Complicated" from the UK release and shuffles the track order from said release. It's still a terrific album, however and highly recommended. Also, If you buy the Vinyl release, it contains a code for a digital download of the entire album.

Tracks 6, 8, and 10 were the highlights for me. I was very impressed with their first album...there was a raw energy similar to Wolfmother (who also helped give me a new hope in the music industry). This one leans a little more on the Duffy pop/rock/female vocal side. It's still good, I love Duffy, just be aware of what you're getting.
