5.0 out of 5 stars Australian country singer popular in homeland, June 13, 2004
This review is from: Wild at Heart (Audio CD)
Australian country music has progressed from its traditional roots but at a much slower pace than its American counterpart, so those of you who have been alienated by American country music in recent years may wish to look at the Australian scene. Beccy Cole, one of their big stars in every sense of the word, has a lovely voice that she uses to good effect on ballads and up-tempo songs. She writes some of her own songs but also likes to cover American songs.

This is actually her second album of three so far - her first, which I also own, includes a fine cover of Strong enough to bend, a country chart-topper for Tanya Tucker that was written by Beth Neilsen Chapman.

Beccy includes another of Beth's song (Emily) here. Other covers of American songs include Do I ever cross your mind (Dolly Parton) on which Beccy is joined by three other Australian country stars (Felicity, Darren Coggan and Adam Harvey), Friends for a lifetime (Claire Lynch), This heart (Mila Mason), Keep on rocking (Confederate railroad), Wild at heart (Lari White) and Ordinary heart (an Emmylou song from the soundtrack of Happy Texas).

Beccy wrote or co-wrote Too strong to break, Never sees anything through, Storm in a D cup, Mother knows best (a duet with Carole Sturzel) and Lazy bones.

I bought this album when it first came out. It has now been re-issued with a bonus live CD at the same price as the original, making it better value for money.

If traditional country roots with just a little contemporary edge appeals to you, give Beccy a listen. If you enjoy her music, you may also enjoy other Australian country ladies including Tania Kernaghan, Gina Jeffreys, Melinda Schneider and Felicity.
