This review is from: Wilde West (Audio CD)
In a not so unusual Amazon.com slip-up, this audio CD is NOT connected to the book or audio cassette of this story so most people won't even know of it's existence. The book has two MUCH better editorial reviews as well as two reader reviews so if you manage to find this edition, check out the book edition!

This story is so unlike any mystery I've read before, I found it very hard to listen to at first. The story is told from three different points of view which was a bit confusing. Kudos to the narrator, Frank Muller, for making every character in the book totally unique and fascinating. He's as good as Barbara Rosenblatt and maybe better!

As the first CD ended, I almost gave up but Wilde's wit was funny and sharp and I was still at work and needed to keep my mind engaged so continued with the second CD. Thank goodness. This story is a gem! It works on so many levels. Great characters, great who dunnit, evocative locations, historical background, and so on. It takes place when the wild, wild west is changing from cowboys and gunmen to politicians and gentrification. I sure didn't know who the murderer was until the end and his unmasking was drawn out adding to the suspense.

The humor ranges from dry wit that only a British character can get away with to down right hilarity. Or, to be more accurate, an Irish character with an English accent. Wilde is very impressed with himself, dramatic and close to over the top but also witty, funny and quite charming and I want to learn more about him. The sheriff more complex than he first seems. Tragic and heroic. The villian a whack job with a sad history.

All in all, a first rate story that is most enjoyable, informative and entertaining. An excellent read!

Also, Doc Holliday is marvelous!
