GREAT BOOK IF YOU HAVE SOME BASIC SKILLS!,
This review is from: Wilderness Evasion: A Guide To Hiding Out and Eluding Pursuit in Remote Areas (Paperback)
This books teaches "Wilderness Evasion"! If you have some basic outdoor skills this books will greatly enhance them. The author obviously has a strong background in military SERE (Escape and Evasion) and gives this knowledge a more civilian focus in the book.
Those with no wilderness skill whatsoever may find this book a bit lacking - the author doesn't spend much time on basic camping skills. However, if you know the basics already, GET THIS BOOK! It will greatly enhance your survival skills. As a wilderness guide and survival instructor myself, and a former military SERE instructor, I strongly recommend this book for anyone ready to move beyond basic survival skills!

Michael Chesbro has a very easy to read writing style. Based on the style and interesting material, I zipped through this book in just a couple of days. Lots of information and tips that I haven't found elsewhere in print. The book doesn't get bogged down trying to re-teach and re-hash things found in other survival books. It directs you to other sources where necessary rather than spending a lot of time on topics covered elsewhere. I consider this a good addition to my survival library simply because it approaches a subject from a different perspective and made me think about some topics differently.

Wilderness Evasion combines just the right mix of survival skills and evasion techniques to make YOU a successful evader.Michael Chesbro has clearly "been there and done that" as is clearly demonstrated by the techniques he teaches in this book. No "Rambo" stuff just accurate, workable, and proven skills and techniques for effective wilderness evasion. I am a SAR (Search & Rescue) Team Leader, and "Wilderness Evasion" is now required reading for all of our team members! OUTSTANDING !

This book covers a lot of subject areas in only about 150 pages. Consequently while it provides a good overview of topics for evasion and short-term wilderness living, it fails to give sufficient information to be very useful to anyone who does not already have the skills. Four and a half pages for Navigation, four for making a shelter - truly just the basics.
You may also be disappointed in the amount of text devoted, strictly speaking, to evasion. The bulk covers basics of medicine, food, shelter, etc. that are the stock of any wilderness survival book.

As a life-long student of survival and self reliance, I greeted "Wilderness Evasion" with particular interest. Most books treat wilderness survival within the context of getting found; this one takes the opposite tack of "getting lost," --and staying healthy and free in the process. But you don't have to be an outlaw or a misanthrope to benefit from this guide. As Mick explains in the introduction entitled Why Would Anyone Want to Hide Out in the Wilderness, the information is for everyone. To quote from page 2: "For people who regularly spend time in the wilderness or who live in remote areas, wilderness evasion can serve as a means of self protection. It takes little effort to find reports...of hikers being mugged or campers being abducted from their campsites." I might add that this information could be even more important for those who only occasionally get out into the wild, and are therefore are even on less familiar ground. Eighteen chapters cover such topics as shelter, food, fire, and navigation, as well as camouflage, primitive weapons, caches, and resupply. I found Mick's chapters on survival medicine and communications to be particularly well done. Both are exellent stand-alone primers on these two essential topics for those who would be self reliant. I particularly liked Mick's advice for putting together an emergency kit, which he dubs The GOOD Kit. A more pleasing (at least to me) sobriquet for the well known B.O.B., the GOOD Kit lists items essential for any emergency situation. Mick Chesbro has a real winner with "Wilderness Evasion." Based on lessons learned during his career with the US Army, "Wilderness Evasion" offers sound advice for anyone interesed in wilderness survival or self reliance. It is a great addition to everyone's outdoor library. My recommendation: Buy this book!

If You Go Into The Woods - READ THIS BOOK,

I have to confess to being a fan of the author Michael Chesbro. His books offer lots of practical information, and "Wilderness Evasion" is no exception. The ability to stay out of sight in remote and wilderness areas has its place even today. Wilderness Evasion teaches you how to avoid being tracked, how to build low-key shelters, how to avoid dogs, find food, and generally 'stay lost' when you want to.
I am not a big outdoorsman, but I do like to take weekend backpacking trips, and this book has taught me how to avoid and evade the two-legged predators one sometimes meets in remote and out-of-the-way place. GREAT BOOK - Get It While You Can!

I found the book a light read for someone who enjoys the outdoors and the survivalist lifestyle as much as I do. The topics from attitude to navigation by the stars to survival medicine to discreet methods in staying in contact with those assisting you will encourage someone with the survivalist attitude to research better informed books about the topics he mentions. For someone new at wanting to escape and evade from The Man, The Mob, or ex-spouses, you read a book like this for the pointers and some general information to research later. A successful survivalist needs detailed and illustrated books on plant identification for the area they plan to stay in for a while, how to get water from every source available (rain, tree sap, or distilling in a 2 liter pop bottle, etc), how to avoid waterborne and foodborne parasites, and camouflaging your entire body (scent included). It's a very good primer for a novice survivalist and would make a nice present for anyone who plans to join the military one day and then finds himself cut off from his unit.

Mick Chesbro really knows his stuff. I think I have the skills to know. I've been teaching survival for over 30 years and when I tied into this book I settled in to learn some new things and new ways of looking at old information. Mick writes in an easy-to-read style that is without pretension. When he decribes a technique it is as if you are seeing the technique. This is not some worn out re-write of a military manual. This is a down to earth manual dealing with an essential skill.I have most of Micks books and everyone of them has changed my viewpoint in some way. Once YOU start reading his works you too will be like me... anxiously waiting for the next in his series. Great work Mick! Ron Hood

There are many survival books out there and this one promised to go beyond what has been written before by claiming to teach one to evade pursuit and survival in the wilds. Unfortunately, after reading the entire book, I was left pondering what I had actually learnt.
Wilderness Evasion turned out to be a basic review of other literature and only touched briefly on the various survival methods available, and rarely went into detail of how to use them effectively. Besides this, the 'evasion' aspect was covered in only one chapter; the rest of the book covering commonly known survival methods. I'm sure there are better texts on offer. Pity.

Disappointed overall.Light on content. Diagrams were reproduced extremely poorly & appeared to be screen captures from PDF format US Army field manuals. Alot of the content also appeared to be regurgitated from Army training manuals. If you want a quick read & a general overview then give it a go otherwise give it a miss. |
