Book Description

September 15, 1999
Mady Donovan and Jason Tiber have little in common-or so they think. When they find themselves lost together in the wilderness of Washington's North Cascades, they realize they share one disturbing similarity: anger with the God they each believe has betrayed them. Together they discover the reality of faith in a broken world-and of God's sufficiency in even the most desperate circumstances. Wilderness is a breathtaking story of adventure and romance that will help readers find their bearings in Christ.

More About the Author

First thing to know about me: I love Oregon. You won't find more varied terrain anywhere. From desert to mountains to forests to the ocean: Oregon has it all. evergreens; a rugged ocean. And climate? Hot, warm, cool, cold, snow, rain, fog, blazing summer heat (as high as 115 degrees!). Every aspect of this state is beautiful in its own way--kind of like life. We face good times and bad, and yet, in every situation, God brings beauty when we least expect it.

I love that about Him.

Second thing to know: I'm a bonafide PK (preacher's kid), but I never went through a rebellion. Why not? 'Cuz my parents are a rare breed: their family was their first ministry. So here I am, a grown up PK, who loves the church, my family, and God.

Let's see...what else? I'm married to a guy who's a blend of John Wayne and Jerry Lewis. He's strong and protective--and just this side of crazy. We've had some major ups and downs, but God has brought us from a very dark place into His love and peace. It still amazes me. (THE BREAKING POINT is based on our struggles and what God taught us.) And though we don't have kids, we have great dogs--our "boy" Bodhan, a Siberian husky whose name means "God's gift." He just showed up on our doorstep one winter, and has been our sweet fella ever since. And then there's Dakota, an Aussie-terrier mix we should have named "Destructo." Good thing we love her!

Last, but not least, there's my day job. I've been an editor in Christian publishing for more than 20 years. In fact, it was my authors who told me I should be writing--and when people like Francine Rivers, Angela Hunt, and Gil Morris tell you to write, you do it. So my days are spent working with such amazing folks as Terri Blackstock, Brandilyn Collins, Bill Myers, Karen Kingsbury, and a host of others on their novels. And my evenings I'm writing. Yes, it's true: my entire life is make-believe.

So that's me in a nutshell (which is where some folks say I belong. Or was that a nut house...?) Thanks for stopping by to find out about me. Hope your day is full of God's best blessings!

5.0 out of 5 stars You will love this!, February 1, 2001
This review is from: Wilderness (Paperback)
The story in this book is about Mady and Jason who meet on a trip to the wilderness with a group of people. Mady's first impression of Jason is that he is a "sourpuss" and he doesn't seem to like her very much either. Adding to that many things happen accidentially, like Mady knocking Jason down with her bag and landing on his back, that aren't very helpfull to create friendship between the two, even if as reader you are always aware that there is something between them. But this story is also a Christian romance. So even after their first kiss Mady can't love Jason because she is a Christian and he doesn't believe in God. Mady can only go on praying about what she sensed already at the beginning of this trip: that she is here to bring Jason close to God. She agrees that God should use her for this purpose even if it takes a trip into the wilderness where she and Jason as a team have to find their way on their own. But they get lost and now have to survive and to wait for help. Can this really be the answer to Mady's prayers?

This book is a romance but not a romance with a helpless woman and a heroic man. It's a story with many funny elements, written in an amusing way from the beginning to the end. I also loved the characters, Mady as a selfconcious woman who believes in God and who tries to obay him even if this sometimes seems to be hard in daily life but she doesn't give up. Also Jason and his past. I always tried to guess what made him turn away from God but I would have never guessed the "real" reason. The author really surprised me at the end. I loved every page of this book and I recommend it to everyone who loves Christian romances. I will definitly buy more books from Karen Ball.

5.0 out of 5 stars Magnificent!, April 26, 2000
This review is from: Wilderness (Paperback)
WILDERNESS is such a magnificently well-written story. I laughed and cried over and over again! This is not the typical predictable story. There are so many ups and downs and surprising circumstances that it is impossible to put this book down!

This is more than a search for Spirituality. It is a wonderful example of how God draws us to Himself and how He can use circumstances and those around us to accomplish His purpose for our lives.

Truly a blessing to read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Refreshing and absorbing, February 7, 2000
This review is from: Wilderness (Paperback)
You'll laugh. You'll smile. You'll gasp. You'll sigh. Karen Ball's unique writing style is refreshing; the story absorbing. And the spiritual elements that bring Mady and Jason on an adventurous journey of personal discovery are tops. Wilderness is a book definitely worth the read.
