Format: Audio CD
This is one of my most favorite CD's and I listen to it often. These songs will transport you back to 200 years ago when "Indiana" was "Indian territory", and the Ohio Valley region was just beginning to receive settlers from the East coast.

The first cut on the CD called "Trees" presents an axman who is sent to clear forest areas for the introducing of cities-- and how he sees the future's potential in his work. The rather scandalous song "Bones" tells the tale of an unearthing of a "giant" skeleton from an Indian mound and the rush of greedy people digging up skeletons thinking they might have some monetary value, without any sense of respect or humanity. But, it's quite a delight to listen to "Ice Mountains & Hairy Elephants", which reveals the simple incredulity of the people toward a visiting surveyor's talk of glaciers carving up the rock in their area... while the townfolk choose to rely on a more "common sense" explanation more fitting with their theological understanding.

The inspiring bravery of the frontier people is demonstrated in the songs "Aurora Means Dawn", "One Woman With a Shovel" and "More Than I Dare Say"-- this last song being about an African American woman who dares to dream unspeakable yet marvelous dreams for her children.

You'll find adventure stirring in "Squaw" as well as heart-breaking tragedy in "Biscuits and Butter" and "The Moon is Forgetting". But there's a couple gems of humor on the CD as well with "Zenas Carter (and his new dug-out canoe)" and "Israel Coe" who makes the greatest sacrifice for good tasting pancakes. There's a dose of frontier faith in "Frostbite on the Soul", "Healing Waters", "Hermit" and the admonitional "Jug Whiskey".

In this genre of music I do not know of another album packed with such talent, literally. Hearing this album is one thing and witnessing the dynamic of these five performers on stage is another! I highly recommend seeing this show live as soon as you can. It will not remain in small theatres much longer!
