A timeless classic,
By Guenter Eichinger (Amberg Germany) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Wilderness Route Finder: The Classic Guide to Finding Your Way in the Wild (Paperback)
This book shows the very basics of navigation and covers map, compass and even finding your position with a sextant. Though the equipment shown is certainly outdated, most of the information is timeless (except the map section which could have been more thorough and UTM Grids are not mentioned). As a casual navigator I liked the book but if you have serious needs for navigation skills there are better and modern books available.

A Classic of Wilderness Navigation,
By
This review is from: The Wilderness Route Finder: The Classic Guide to Finding Your Way in the Wild (Paperback)
Calvin Rutstrum's classic 'The Wilderness Route Finder' belongs in in the library of every serious land navigation student.
Rutstrum takes the concept of route finding far beyond the concept of orienteering (although he does discuss it and supports it), and takes the reader into the far more comprehensive world of land navigation, using skills, tools and techniques that range far beyond mere map and compass work. Rutstrum's book was written long before the era of GPS, Google Earth, cell phones and digital compasses (my copy is dated 1967). It discusses equipment that is either no longer manufactured and has entered collector status, or has been overtaken by more modern and accurate designs. While the book is dated, the core concept of Rutstrum's work remains extremely sound - use all available tools and skills to establish your position and navigate safely through the backwoods. Highly recommended!
