Wonderful book.

I buy many of these and can say this is one of the best out there. I do have a few larger books that are more helpful with color coded section and other goodies but this is what I carry on a hike or camping. If you read enough of the first aid books you will find two ongoing themes. 1) This is serious call 911 or 2) Use the thing-a-ma-gig to bypass the whosit and then perform a insert latin name here. Obviously the first is too simplistic and the section assumes a non-practical proficiency. This is the happy middle. It does tell you to get help but give you some well thought out steps and temp fixes to get you and whomever you are with out of trouble and too help.

Overall this is the book I carry wherever I go and one I lend (an extra copy) to others in our group when camping. The two things I would change are the organization a bit and it should be made out of waterproof paper. More expensive but at double it would be worth it.

I am already familiar with this text from other sources but wanted something on my B&W kindle. First, it is important to mention that for outdoor usage, the B&W kindle blows all other products out of the water -- color kindle, iPhones, android, tablet computers are ALL generally useless compared to the B&W kindle in outdoor situations. I intend to bring the kindle on wilderness expeditions (I am a certified WFRer), and I then wanted to get a good WFA book. This would not have been my first choice, there is another one that is used in the training program which I received my certification from that I liked slightly better. For my purposes, familiarity is important, and I also find Weiss slightly less handy as a look-up reference. However, it is well renowned and I do not regret my purchase whatsoever, it is going to fulfill my needs. (That other text is also available on Kindle, but I also did not want two different formats of the same book, although I may get it at some time in the future Wilderness First Responder, 3rd: How to Recognize, Treat, and Prevent Emergencies in the Backcountry (Wilderness First Responder: How to Recognize, Treat, &).)

This kindle version, I should mention, did take the time to get the graphics right, which is an extremely important part of the value of this text, and I am very happy with that as well.

Note the 5.9 x 4.2 x 0.5 inches dimensions in the product description. This is a pocket book, apparently sized for insertion into Adventure Medical Kits, medical kits, some of which are pretty compact. So don't expect a full-sized book. That said, I'm lovin' it. It has clear line drawings. Everything seems to be written to be as short and sweet--as useful--as possible. For instance it gives the pros and cons of how to purify water. It covers from high-altitude pulmonary edema to the bends, from wound closure tape to duct tape, and how to use honey to make a nonadherent dressing. Clever and useful....

This has been my first-line book for three editions now. It is authoritative and very well detailed for such a small and light weight book. For backup I have the "bible", Auerbach's Wilderness Medicine Expert Consult Premium Edition, on my android, but I feel very comfortable that if the android goes out of service in the field, this book will get me through. There are two things it is especially good for. I made a one-page cheat sheet which crams everything I need from this book (left out some of the travel and diving medicine) into reminder-note form. Printed out and protected with clear tape, that is in my pocket every minute I'm in the wilderness. If you do that and review the notes once a year, you'll have a tremendous amount of knowledge on the top of your head and at your fingertips. The book itself goes into my pack. The other thing this book is great for is making clear the scope of procedures I'm willing to perform on my family and on others. If instructions for performing something are in a general first aid manual for the lay audience, such as that by the American College of Emergency Physicians, I'll do the procedure on anyone who needs it. If instructions are not in that book but are in this book, such as reduction of a dislocation, decompressing a tension pneumothorax, or performing a cricothyroidotomy, I'll do it for members of my family and close friends, but only after really thinking through the procedure before getting into the situation of needing it. If a procedure is not in this book, but is in Auerbach's book - well, that's the true grey area for me.

Given the price, I was surprised at how comprehensive this book was compared to other similarly priced 'first aid' manuals. The primary selling point for me was that this book does not stop halfway through a first aid procedure and say "now call 911" like so many other manuals do. This book will walk you through each procedure and indicate where you should stop and contact help if you can, and how far you should take an emergency procedure if you wont be able to access help for a day or two, making it useful for most comfort levels and for even the most dire emergency situation. I'm going to pick up a few more copys for friend's and to keep with other first aid kits.

As previously noted by the dimensions and other reviewers, this book is about .5"x4"x5", and is easy enough to carry in your pocket or keep in a kit. It's well written and easy to follow, and the text is easy to read.

If you buy this, I suggest you familiarize yourself with the contents to some degree, so that you know what you're looking for more specifically if you need to use it. Like any first aid manual, the book is only as good as a persons ability to reference the information in it efficiently.
