Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

In Rogers's unpolished latest, Rowena Dangerfield, raised in India by her grandfather, goes on a globe-trotting quest for a staggering fortune. The plot takes Rowena from India to London and New Mexico, where she must claim an unlikely inheritance. As she reads the diaries of the father she never knew, Rowena discovers that she is supposed to make peace between two embittered families, and as independent as she thinks she is, she's still not prepared for the web of love, intrigue and violence that fills the frontier. Unfortunately, Rowena comes across as clinically detached instead of headstrong, and nearly every encounter she has with a man (even the "good" ones) reads like an assault. The plot, meanwhile, moves in fits and starts, and many pages are eaten up with atrocious dialogue ("Listen, you stubborn, bad-natured female! When are you going to realize I want you?"). If you read only one doorstop romance this summer, don't make it this one.

5.0 out of 5 stars ABSOLUTELY ADORED IT!, February 18, 2000
This review is from: The Wildest Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
I first read this book when I was sixteen. I am in my mid thirties now and have never forgotten either Rowena Dangerfield or Lucas Cord and I still have the book! The story is written differently to Sweet Savage Love-also by the same author- in that the scenes of intimacy between Lucas and Rowena are very brief and hardly described. As Ms Rogers has a particular skill for writing passionate scenes, i would have liked to have seen more intimacy between them and more focus on their relationship. That would be my only critisicm of this book , however the 5 stars are for totally captivating me and wanting the book to go on and on! The plot itself was brilliant and had you guessing until quite late in the book and there was a great twist at the end. I absolutely adored Lucas Cord-the hero- who aswell as being a traditionally strong silent type, was utterly endearing because of the vulnerable side to his character which he let Rowena see. I would absolutely love it if Miss Rogers would do a sequel to this because even after all these years I still find myself wanting to know more about them. As an absolute lover of Rosemary Rogers books I was really disappointed with the sequels to Sweet Savage Love as the two central characters just kept fighting and sleeping with other people. A sequel to The Wildest Heart would give her a chance to redeem herself! If anyone knows where I can write to Miss Rogers please let me know!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful book!, September 11, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Wildest Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
This was a refreshing change from Rosemary Rogers Steve and Ginny stories and also from her other titles. Rowena comes to America hoping to meet her long lost father and to start a new life away from England and her shallow mother and stepfather. She arrives to find herself in the middle of a longstanding feud. Although, the heroine, Rowena, seems cold at first, you see her transforming into a warm human being during the course of the story as she learns more about the people and history of her new American home. Lucas, the hero is enigmatic, stoic and tragic and he is haunted by his past. Both characters have had less than ideal backgrounds prior to meeting and this colors their perceptions of people. This is a story of how hate and revenge can ruin lives but it is also a story of being open hearted and willing to listen to both sides of a story. The characters are colorful. Some are shallow while others are more hidden and complex. There is an element of suspense to the novel as the reader finds out what happened so long ago to initiate the feud. The ideas of duty and fate are touched on in this book but don't cast an overbearing shadow.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly Captivating, May 2, 2000
This review is from: The Wildest Heart (Mass Market Paperback)
The Wildest Heart was the first historical romance I ever read...and that was at fourteen. The characterization and story still capture my imagination today (I am in my mid-thirties). I enjoyed being introduced to Rowena and Lucas and viewing the struggles they went through, both together and individually. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to watch them grow emotionally and to watch them discover they were stronger than they realized. Rosemary Rogers' Wildest Heart kept me captivated well beyond the last page...beyond the last word...her Ro and Luke continue to wander out there in the southwest, two truly "wild hearts."
